Anyone ovulate two eggs

Last week I had my first ultrasound. Everything looked great and we got to see and hear the heartbeat. However, the sonographer noticed that I had ovulated two eggs. DH about had a heart-attack. She reassured us that there was only one embryo. She asked me if twins run in my family, and I told her they don't to my knowledge. She then said that it's normal for women to occasionally ovulate two eggs. Weird.

So I was wondering if anyone else has had the same issue, and if so, do twins run in your family? Is this probably just a one time thing? I'm just curious about this and google hasn't been very helpful. Thanks in advance.

  • This may be a stupid question, but how can they tell?

  • Maybe can see the corpus luteum(s) on her ovaries?
  • I have ovulated two eggs in the past. I'm not sure how my ob saw it but she did. I had some weird period issues were I bled for like 3 weeks and she told me she saw two eggs and told me to keep my husband away if I didn't want twins.

  • When you ovulate, there is often a cyst left or the corpus luteum left behind.  Fraternal twins are hereditary, or ovulation of two eggs.  This is why they probably asked if there were any twins in your family.
  • Yes, but because we did an IUI w/ injectables.

This. They check your ovaries (or at least my place does) to make sure everything's okay.

The sonographer also said that most women ovulate two eggs at some points in their lives, though it doesn't happen frequently. Twins don't run in my family, so if this is a fluke incidence I'm just wondering how many other women have had the same issue.

  • Age also plays a role according to my dr. Women over 35 often release more than one egg. My dr. Made a joke saying that it was your body giving it all its got before things start changing.
  • I hope I didn't Lol. 1 set of twins is enough. My twins were identical so it was just 1 egg that split. I have twins in my family (My papa's mom was a fraternal twin). Hoping for just one baby this time.

  • I did, but this was a Clomid cycle so that was the cause. Fraternal twins do run in my family, but we have confirmed that this is a singleton pregnancy.
