What to get for my dad????

We're having my dad and his wife over for dinner Tuesday for his birthday. I have no idea what to get him! He has a really good job and could get himself almost anything he wants but he likes to live simply. I thought at first having him over would be enough. I'm going to try to make him a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting that isn't too sweet because he doesn't like sweets, but I would like to get him something.
A little back story, I'll TRY to keep it short. I was never really close to my dad growing up. He worked a lot to provide for us (and i later found out to cover for my mom's crazy spending habits). I had a rather dramatic, infamous move out from the house (I left 2 days before my 18th bday) and i didn't talk to my parents for almost a year after. We started talking again, then he wanted a divorce from my mom. I think he had every right to. Then I found out I was pregnant with our first. I was talking to my mom a lot and she talked a lot about my dad. She was trying to get my siblings and I on her side. After taking a step back and realizing she was lying about a bunch of stuff and when I started talking to my dad's then girlfriend to get to know her, she went psycho. My dad and I (as strange as it sounds) have bounded over the experience and are closer then we have ever been. He's been very supportive of my DH and our growing family. That's why it's important to me to get him something meaningful. I just don't know what. Any thoughts??

  • Umm... Honestly no idea! I don't know what he likes or what he already has so its pretty hard to come up with a "meaningful" gift.

Do you already have kids?? My parents love to get photo books and framed pictures of my DS. My husband had a picture blown up and printed on canvas and that was a pretty sweet gift.

  • Ah. That would be helpful. We have a son who's 3. He likes to play golf but doesn't really have the time. He'll go target shooting with his wife sometimes and he likes our local baseball team.
  • How old are his clubs? You could always have them regripped. My husband loved that. He said that they feel like brand new clubs.
    -GC to golf course/driving range
    -tickets to a ball games

I'm a fan of the photo album/scrapbook. You can create them online and pick them up at the store. (CVS, costco, etc.) I did one for my parents and they loved it. My DS from birth until present age. What grandparent doesn't like pictures of the grandkids?!? And you can end it with an ultrasound picture of the new one and/or a picture with your DS and your belly. Like "sequel coming June 2014."

  • I like the photobook idea. Also, my sister bought my dad a shirt that matched my nephew to wear on fathers day last year. My nephew was so excited to dress like poppop, my dad was thrilled.
  • Similar to the photo idea from PPs, how about a calendar with pics of your kid each month? Staples makes them. My bro makes one for my mom every year at Christmas and she loves it!

  • We get my dad a fishing permit every year and he loves taking my son with him. I agree with pps on getting something he can use to do something he likes rather than more stuff.
  • I'm really close with my Dad, and I got him a personalized bobble head one year. It was a huge hit, because he had recently launched his business and the people he worked with placed a premium on creativity (i.e., it was a cool conversation starter to put on his desk). I've also done a personalized iPhone case from uncommon. Some other ideas:

    2) Personalized golf balls (Titleist and most companies allow this, but I don't know the turnaround)
    3) A DVD Set (30 for 30, documentary, etc)
    4) Dodo iPad case
    5)  If he likes museums, culture or history - find a museum in your area and walk through the gift shop. They usually have interesting books, photos, etc.
    6) Tickets to see his favorite sports team, band, event, etc.
    7) Magazine subscription for something he's interested in

Does he have a special event or trip coming up? My Dad always appreciates something that fits the theme of an upcoming family vacation or event along with a thoughtful handwritten note.

Hope this helps, and good luck finding the perfect gift -- it's out there!

  • Thanks everyone!!! Great suggestions!
  • @pcourtade since you mentioned that you knit, why not knit him something so its sentimental to him since you would have to pic colors, and design etc to make it?

Mine & DHs anniversary is next month as is my moms birthday and I plan on crocheting them both something :)
