STMs - baby doll recommendation

Hi Ladies,

Has anyone purchased a little boy baby doll for their son/daughter to prepare them for their new sibling? My son was showing interest in a baby doll at a friend's house last night so I was thinking this might be a good way to teach him to be gentle and help with his baby brother. I was just wondering if anyone has tried this and has a specific baby doll recommendation or has any advice on how well it worked for you!

Thanks!

Re: STMs - baby doll recommendation

  • DD has a few dolls, but for the big sis gift, I am going to get her this one:
They have boy and girl dolls and they kind of look like a newborn, but don't weigh a ton like the realistic baby dolls.

  • I bought a fairly inexpensive baby doll from Target for DD for Christmas.  It's a Fisher Price off-brand, I forget the name.  She also has the Baby Stella doll from Manhattan Toys.

So far her baby dolls are way different to her than real babies. She likes to "take care" of her baby dolls, but she definitely knows the difference between and is absolutely fascinated with real babies. I don't know that her dolls will have helped prepare her in any way, but my nephew's might.
That said I really like the Melissa and Doug doll we got off Amazon, but I don't think they make a boy doll.

How old is your DS? It might make a difference. If he is younger, a doll like MrsT2008 mentioned (Manhatten doll - love those too!) would be better. The one I posted is for my DD who will be 3.5 and will want to dress, feed, diaper and wear the baby doll (I imagine), so I wanted one she could do all that with.
ETA: This is a link to the Manhatten Toys boy stella doll:

  • I bought my niece the Baby Stella doll for Christmas. She is in love with it. It comes with a magnetic nuk and you can buy a feeding set that also has a bottle the connects to the mouth. I highly recommend this doll. They even make a boy baby. https://www.amazon.com/Manhattan-Toy-Baby-Stella-Boy/dp/B0036AWTDM

He is 20 months. I was actually looking at the Stella doll because there is a boy version on Amazon with good reviews. There is definitely a more limited selection for baby boy dolls. But I wasn't sure if going with a stuffed doll like that would be less useful since it's not very realistic looking... Hmm...

Oh yes, I was considering that one! I might end up going with it, I think.

  • I'm a FTM but both my brother and SIL bought baby dolls for their boys. My brother has two boys and a girl and my SIL has a boy and a girl. They loved having dolls before their brother and sisters came. I think it helped them a lot with learning how to be more gentil, at least at first. My SIL just bought my nephew another doll who is all dressed up with boy clothes to get ready for my little one comes. He takes his little doll every where, it's very cute. The doll is probably as big as my hand but it came with clothes. She just bought her dolls at Target. I think having a doll helped all three of my nephews with learning that they need to be gentil with a baby.
  • DD has a Bitty Baby. She decided on her own that its a boy and named it James (after her 14 year old cousin, lol). I would say just get a fairly large, ambiguously gendered doll with a soft body. DD's wears an actual newborn sleeper that she picked from baby brother's wardrobe, so if you can only find dolls with girly clothes, you can always try a newborn or preemie sleeper even if its not a perfect fit.

  • Great suggestions, thank you! I like the idea of getting a cheap one at Target and dressing it in some of DS' newborn clothes even. I love the Stella doll, but I am hesitant to spend 30 bucks on something he might not be very interested in.

  • I got DS the boy Stella doll for his second birthday. He will be 2.5 this week and he still plays with it. It's good quality and definitely worth the money!

  • I am going to get DS a cabbage patch doll. They have boy dolls and it's soft enough that of he want to sleep with it he could. And you can get different cloths.

    DS is almost 2.5
