U/S double billed because of twins?

I'm not sure what's going on at my OB's office with the billing of ultrasounds. Were any of you billed for 2 ultrasounds for 1 visit because of your twins? I'm hoping it's a billing error as it's only been done on 2 out of the 4 I've had there. I get that there are 2 babies, but I don't think the u/s tech is taking so long that they need to bill 2 separate charges. I have an appt on Monday so I'll clarify with the office, but just want to make sure this isn't standard practice.

Re: U/S double billed because of twins?

  • I was always billed double for all my ultrasounds. Kind of crazy since it probably only takes them an extra 2 or 3 minutes, with the exception of the anatomy scan.

yep- I had 14 u/s done and was billed for 28.- oh and mine were done at MFM office.
  • Nice. :( It would make more sense to me if they just billed for a higher "difficulty" level. Say the $350 charge instead of the $285 one. Oh well, I guess I'll meet my deductible one way or another! Thanks!!

  • Yes - always one main charge and a second, supplementary charge for the second baby.

It might not have taken double the time, but doing the second growth measurements certainly takes longer than if just one baby.

  • We had weekly u/s done from basically the beginning due to fluid issues, my appendix removal and then IUGR ... I had a ton to say the least. Never were we double billed. Even for the A/S U/S that was billed single as well. This is from both my midwife, my OB, and my MFM.

  • We haven't been double billed, but the statements do indicate "multiples: twins", so it probably is billed differently than a singleton pregnancy.
  • I was always billed double for u/s.  It's a very common practice.

  • My OB charges for two U/S.
  • at the MFM the doctor booked us for two appointment spaces so I am assuming they would charge two fees.

For the NT and A/S scans, they bill per baby. They also take up two appts though since they're giving full attention to each baby, so I suppose that's understandable. For regular visits though it's just a single charge I believe.

  • Yes, I was billed for two ultrasounds as well.  FYI-You will get billed for a double delivery, too.  My OB gave me a discount for the 2nd one though.

  • Yep, unfortunately so. It is billed as additional fetus. My NTH scan was $720, and anatomy was $880 because of it (which included my insurance discount).

  • Yes if they took measurements on both babies we were billed for both.

  • I guess it threw me off since they didn't bill it that way from the beginning. My ins denied 1 u/s charge the 1st time they billed for 2, but then paid for both the 2nd time. I guess maybe the dr's office didn't use the correct coding on the 1st charge. I'm just thankful I have insurance!!

That really annoys me... its only one ultrasound. I get they are measuring two babies (or more) but still... I think I have only been billed for one thus far but I'm tempted to ask now... I pay 100% of my ultrasounds and it costs me $132 each time, until I meet my insurance deductible. Does that price sound normal?

My OB does them at every appt and yes I am billed double. It's the charge for the u/s and then a extra charge, almost as much as the original charge, for the second baby.

Mine cost us $270 per time, per baby at MFM for the u/s plus additional fees which were also charged twice for twins.

  • I did not get charged more than one copay for my u/s with my twins, and I remember checking the delivery and hospital bill and was only charged for one c/s, but it was noted as a delivery of multiples.

Now, there were some issues to get straightened out B's hospital bills did not get insurance info loaded since B was not linked to my delivery by the billing codes, so it was coming to my home as "self pay". Once I called and got it clarified with their business office that there was an A baby and B baby with the same insurance, they quickly straightened out the error and got the claim sent to be processed with my insurance. No more trouble after that.
