? for BFing mama's who have babes with teeth

Does your LO bite you??
DS has started this the other day and it really really hurts.  He has 4 teeth and is teething and cutting two more.  So I'm hoping this biting is just part of the teething process and will stop once the teeth come in.
It seems the only time I can nurse him with out him biting me is after he has some tylenol :(  and I'm not going to give him tylenol more then absolutely needed. So I have been pumping and dipping into my freezer stash to keep up with him.  ugh......I'm so upset about this.  I want to comfort him because he is upset but I can't because he will just bite me.  So now every time I think it is safe to nurse him I give it a try and he will sometimes give a few sucks then bite.  It doesn't seem like he is doing it just to bite me (if that makes sense), but I don't know what to do.  I've read that it's best not to yell out when it happens but really that is impossible because it hurts SO much.  I just don't know what to do about it.....

  • Yes, DS does bite. It sucks. He has his top two and bottom two and when he clamps down, oh good god it hurts. But he doesn't do it on purpose and it is usually in his sleep. Sometimes he kind of grinds them constantly on my nipple and that is even worse. I haven't reacted yet, besides clenching my teeth, because he isn't doing it on purpose. But when he does, I'll just pull him off and say no. Don't know if that will work though. Sorry, not much help!

The first time I unlatch and calmly say no. The second time same, but cover myself up for maybe 30 seconds. Third time, nursing session is over. Once I followed that consistently she stopped biting pretty quickly and hasn't done it in weeks.
I have been doing this as well so hopefully it works.

I'm going to jinx myself, but no, he hasn't yet. Maybe it's because he only has one tooth? DId any of you notice it happened when your LO got more teeth?
DS has 4 teeth now two on  bottom and top.  He just got his two top teeth a few weeks ago and just started the biting yesterday.  He has two more coning in on the top so I'm hoping that this is just a teething thing and will not last.....

  • DD has two coming through. I must admit I'm scared of the prospect of her biting. She's nipped once but hasn't full on bitten me yet. If she does I think I will try maymomNY's method.

  • Yes he's just started doing this, usually at the end of a nursing session. Thankfully he only has two bottom teeth and none on top.

Today when he started doing it, I told him no firmly. Then he did it again harder and I yelped pretty loudly and he started crying. I felt horrible and rubbed his back and calmed him down. He latched back on, did it again, and the cycle repeated itself lol. It wasn't pretty
  • DS has only 2 bottom teeth and will bite/clench at the end of the nursing session. I will unlatch him and re-offer if he goes back for it. If he does it again I will put him on the other side.

  • I flicked Z in the nose when he bit me. I am a mean mom. I've asked around and apparently most other AF mom's are, too!

Seriously, or is this a joke and I missed something??

When J got his bottom two he started biting. I cried out when he did it. Both because I couldn't help it and because my LC told me to. He would pull off and start to cry when he'd hear my "ouch" and I would then snuggle him and the nursing session was over. He would stop fussing immediately

He bit for two days and never has since. And no nursing strike or anything like that. Well see if he bites again when the tops come Iin.

  • DD has had her two bottom teeth since 5 months and she does bite me pretty often :( It hurts a ton. I try not to cry out, but it does sometimes happen, because it's very painful. Usually, she does it at the end of a nursing session, when the tap runs dry :) So, I usually take her off the breast and put her on the other one at that point. Sometimes she bites me to get a let down too, and when she does that, I remove her, cover myself for a minute and then re-offer and usually she is ok after that.

And people think leashes are cruel and for dogs. I'm so confused.

  • It seems at night when he is ready for bed and nice and relaxed is when he will really nurse for a long time and without biting.  I'm hoping today goes much better.

  • It seems LO can't bite when he is latched, since tongue extends ice teeth. He did some biting for awhile. I paid close attention and as soon as he unlatched I pulled him away from the breast.

I think it's just a phase, as my LO doesn't do it nearly as often.

  • My sister used to tap my nephews mouth. The three strike rule has worked. Not because of my ouches which cracked her shit up but because she hit strike three twice and I put the buble away both times.

Yea. The flick still seems weird to me. The loud "ouch" made him laugh the first time. Then the next few times he would start to cry. I truly think he knew it hurt. I didn't yell and his cry wasn't a "mommy yelled at me" kind of cry. And honestly, I couldn't not yelp if I tried, that shit hurt. Whether it was the yelp or the ending the session (bites always came at the end anyway so I'm not so sure), he got it very quickly. I'd yelp, he'd start to cry, I'd snuggle, he'd smile and we were good.

Edit: autocorrect didn't want me to say shit

Agreed. It is pretty hard not to yelp when they bite.  DS would cry if I did because it scared him more then anything.
I'm sure he got the hint to not bite after a few times of me stopping the nursing session completely.  Here's to hoping he remembers to not bite tomorrow...

Most of my friends say they give a little flick on the mouth. It's a flick guys, I'm sure she's not punching him in the nose.
I'm imagining it's like when a toddler touches something they shouldn't and you tap their hand and say no.
    This.
I did the flick once or twice and it didn't really phase him. I was afraid to do it too hard. He would laugh at my pain cries. I think ending the session has worked best. Either that or he just hasn't gotten the urge to bite recently.
    Edited: to add more info
Oh man I'm probably going to get flamed but I flicked her nose cause I also had heard that's what your supposed to do but by no means was it hard and abusive. She just turned her lip at me and that was the end of her biting. She didn't do it again so obviously it worked.
