Newborn Photography

Hey everyone!

I was looking at how much these cost...oh. my. gosh. The GOOD photography places were charging $200-$300 JUST for the photo session-not including actually buying the photos.

How much are you willing to spend on photos?

I apologize if this has already been discussed and if it has let me know and i will look back on previous boards.

Re: Newborn Photography

  • We are spending in that range. We got a discount on the siting fee and the package. We figure it will only happen once, so it's not that big a deal.

  • We are spending a little more, but I don't want maternity pictures...I am in love with newborn pics so I feel like it's worth it!

  • Okay you are helping me to not feel guilty! Thank you!!
  • Good newborn photography is labor intensive and also takes a lot of time/practice to get the babies to pose and all that...not to mention the props can be really expensive.  There definitely is a premium for it!  If they start at $200-$300, I'd ask what their average clients spends and/or get a full price sheet so you know you're not paying $100 per 5x7 or anything like that.

I'd guess there are studios that would include prints/files/products, etc. but the starting price will be that much higher.  And the price will heavily depend on the area you live in and what the market will bear.  I do newborn photography along with regular portraits, weddings and all that. Personally I'd be fine spending $500-$700 on newborn photography and would hope to get at least a selection of digital files for that price but I like to trade with photographer friends when possible.

  • We just booked our photographer over the weekend.  Like almost everyone else, we're paying in that same range.

And I agree with PP. This is something you splurge on because you really only get one chance.

  • I think my package is around $800, but I'm paying a little more to get all of the digital images. I love looking back at DD's so much and think it's worth it. That said, when the photog I used for DD more than doubled her rates in 14mo (now charging $1600 for what I got) I quickly started looking for someone else.

  • We are paying 350, they come to our home and I get a disc with all photos and rights to all photos
  • We are paying $150 for our newborn session and that doesn't include any prints.  I think I will also have to pay for the CD of all the photos as well.  We only have one choice for photographers because we are stationed overseas and there is only one person here that does it.  She is pretty good from what I've seen and heard.  I think we are getting a great deal for a four hour newborn session.

  • Luckily the girl who did my maternity photos only charges me 100 an the same will happen for new born pics with all the rights to my photos on a cd. I'll then pay out of pocket to have them printed but I'm ok with that
  • We are paying $250 which includes a CD so we can print our own images. I am not getting maternity photos so I didn't mind paying a little more. It is the same photographer who did our wedding and engagement photos so I am very excited!

  • The newborn packages at the place I chose range from 375 for a mini session then 500 newborn only, 575 newborn and parents and 700 for all inclusive. I have not decided what package I'm doing yet.
  • We are paying $125. The photographer comes to our home and we get a cd with the prints.
  • We are paying $225 and that includes all of the digital files. The photographer is also coming to our house, which seemed like an added bonus!

  • The photography we have picked out charges $300 period, but we get a disc with all the edit images included in that. We didn't have the money with our first son to get good newborn shots so we're willing to send this time around. And I want to have really good sibling pictures too.

  • We are paying $200 with no prints.  Our photography has done all of our pictures for important events, so I would be willing to pay her even more than that.  Well worth it to pay for someone you trust to do good work in my opinion.

We are spending $800 on a maternity, newborn, 6mo, and 1-year photo sessions altogether. We got a crazy deal (50% off) because my photographer is due 3/22 (I'm due 3/10) and she is offering the 50% off this package deal to anyone due within 4 weeks of her due date since she may have to push back the newborn photos by 3 weeks. I'm ok with that if it means I get to save $800!!

EDIT: This price includes the digital files, 50 birth announcement cards, and collage of photos, and I think 8 prints

  • Oh and we do have to go to their studio. Always two photographers and they do amazing photos. I put down 175 to reserve a spot. Arguing with DH on what package to choose actually. He thinks newborn shots are weird and not necessary. Sigh.
  • I'm sure it's a regional thing. I am paying about 1100 for newborn, 6 mos, and 1 yr photo shoot package at the locations of our choosing (her studio, our house or anywhere within an hour drive) and that's actually a bargain, I think current price is more.  I went with the same photographer from DD and she gave me the price I paid 2 yrs ago, the straight up newborn shoot was about 500, so over 3 shoots its a discount.  I do get a DVD or sub for prints instead.

I have looked at others and she is on par, but has also won several local awards for years, so I'm comfortable with it.

I think my area is fairly saturated with photographers of all kinds, there is always someone wanting to expand their portfolio if you want to do the research and find someone who will charge less.

  • The price will greatly depend on where you live and the experience of the photographer. That said, the prices you're saying are about average. The equipment alone costs a lot, plus the session takes a long time and editing of newborn photos is a little more time consuming than other. Spend the money, they are only that little one time ever and you will regret it if you don't get them. A good resource is www.newbornphotography.com They have a bunch of tips and photographer profiles to help you find photogs in your area and compare portfolios and such.

  • $0 I can't justify paying that amount of money when I can do them at home like I did with our other 2 boys for free.

Photographers make very little per hour. I charge $300-400 for a 4 hour session with newborns. I do 4 hours to allow for feedings, fussiness, etc. after the shoot I spend days editing. For the amount of work I do per shoot I make about $2-3 an hour. I include in the session fee a DVD of the photos with a copyright release. Photographers do so much more than just take pictures. Also the cost of equipment is thousands of dollars. Not to mention the years of school and student loans I spent learning the trade. It may seem like a lot to you but the fee is our living.
  • We spent $450 for DD's newborn photos, including the CD with printing rights. We were at the photographer's studio for 3.5 hours. We booked the same photographer for the same price this time.
