? for outdoorsy/extreme sports families

DH and I have always been very active even before the baby. We do a lot of outdoor activities like hiking, snowboarding, water skiing, etc. You get the idea. We obviously want to introduce DD to these things one day, but we dont know when the best age is to get her into these things. When did you introduce your kids to these types of sports?

  • We take LO on hikes, but we wear him. We're going to wait till next year for any snow skiing, probably after he's 2, bc at 1 year old our little one has yet to walk. We have no plans for water skiing. We put the little guy in the water during the summer, but haven't started teaching swimming yet. We probably won't for a couple of years.

  • i don't know the general answer to your question-- I'd guess 3 or 4 for the difficult ones like skiing, but what about a toy like this:  https://www.fatbraintoys.com/toy_companies/garageco_toys/yo_baby_kick_flipper.cfm?source=google_pla&kwid=YOB001&gclid=CO6o-JG4ibwCFQmCfgody2YABQ

it says age 4, but I think that would be good for building the snowboarding skills before getting all the equipent and snow in the mix...

And I agree with PPs, you can hike as soon as you want-- just bring a carrier so you can carry LO when they get tired, and bring snacks : )

  • Our extreme sports sound a little more motorized than everyone else's. But, he already rides quads, snowmobiles and jet skiis with us. He did pretty much as soon as he could maintain a sitting position.

We go for walks but not hiking and he walks along or rides on dad's shoulders.

I think skiing is a great idea! My brother just complained that he wishes he could spend more one on one time with his nephew and he goes multiple times a week. I'm going to see if I can find similar ones on Amazon as well.
  • We have hiked with DD since she was about 4 months old. First in the Ergo and later in the Kelty carrier. She's almost 2 now so we let her hike on the flat parts of the trail for as long as she shows interest. She went on her first camping trip at 6 months old.

We plan to start with skiing when she is 3, which is the minimum age for most ski schools close to us. So not this season, but hopefully the tail end of next season. We will wait longer for snowboarding, though, since that requires a bit more coordination and upper body strength (when you're learning and having to push yourself up all the time).
