Moms who are currently in school... check-in?

I know that there are ladies other than myself who are currently enrolled in some type of schooling, and trying to do that and raise a newborn is a challenging task! So I was just wondering if there would be any interest in a check-in for moms going to school. We could discuss things that we are having a hard time with, and try to support and motivate each other through it.

If you are interested, post here and let me know. Say something about yourself, what you are taking, when you should be finished, what you are hoping to do with the education, whatever you want to share, and we will go from there!

If there isn't any interest, that is okay too, I just thought it might be nice to get together with some other mamas in the same situation.

  • I'm halfway thru my Masters in Nursing Education. It's all online, I'm due to finish Feb 2015.
I'm struggling right now and I still have a cooking baby (till Monday that is) my other kids like the opportunity when I'm on the computer to disrupt, destroy, do something they know they're not supposed too. I can't imagine how I'm going to do it all with one to nurse and 4 to chase. I'm schedule to start my next class a week after my c-section.

Good for you cowscrub! I can't imagine trying to complete a degree with 4 little ones, but we will be here to help support you. The fact that it is online is nice, you can do things at a time of day that works for you (well, as much as your family life will allow of course lol).

Is there a day that you would prefer the check-in to be posted?

  • And I realized that I didn't answer my own questions!

I'm currently finishing my BA in Psychology. I'm enrolled in 2 half credit courses right now (they finish in April) and then I only need one more half credit until my degree is finished! I'm hoping like heck that the university offers something that I can take in the spring session, which would finish my degree in about July. I have done a large portion of this degree part time so it is really taking me a while to finish, but it feels great to be so close.

  • Here ye, here ye.

I'm an Executive MBA student due to graduate this June. I plan for a much better job than I had and major jump in salary.

I had class this weekend and the next class is in 2 weeks (1/31), due 1/28. This is gonna be interesting. Luckily they record the sessions so the time I'll be out, I not completely SOL.

    Great idea for a check-in @km_md.

  • I like this idea a lot!

I'm currently doing an online certification program for English as a second language teaching certificate. Each class is five weeks and has discussion posts, readings, quizzes, and a paper. I've got two more classes to go and will finish in the end of April.

Nearly failed this last class since DD came early, but the professor was nice enough to accept late work from me as long as it was done before the end of the course.  DH helped a lot with DD so I could finish things up.  I had emailed the professor while in early labor and she was impressed that I did that.

Just need to figure out how to get the work done in between feedings and get some naps in.

I'm glad that you ladies are on board! You must feel great being so close to graduation! I'm glad that there is something that you can do to get caught up on whatever you miss - some institutions seem to be so much more understanding than others.

Is there a day that works best for you for a check-in?

I'm glad that you like it! ESL teaching seems like a great road to take these days. You are also really close to finishing! It is hard to keep motivated with a little one, but knowing that all of the work will be over soon makes it easier.  I'm glad that you had an understanding professor and can get through this class.

Do you have a day that you would like me to post the check-in every week?

  • I'm finishing my BS in child development. I earned my AS in 2006, but got married instead of finishing my ECE degree. I'm doing all my classes online, taking one every 6 weeks. I started a new class this week and have 8 left after this one, so I should be done by the end of the year.
I'm having a tough time with this class and managing my time. I thought if I could manage working full time and having two little ones, I shouldn't have a problem doing it at home on maternity leave with just the baby. I was wrong. Hopefully I get it figured out soon.

  • f you are interested, post here and let me know. Say something about yourself, what you are taking, when you should be finished, what you are hoping to do with the education, whatever you want to share, and we will go from there!

I am currently finishing up my residency in pediatric dentistry and a Masters in oral sciences. I will be finished in June.

I have been in some form of schooling full time ever since I graduated high school in 2003. I am excited to move on to life after formal education.

My plans right now are to find a job in public health for about 5 years to help pay down student loans and also for the benefits should we decide to have a third child. During that time I plan on saving for starting my own private practice. I hope during that time that we get to take a few vacations too. DH and I got married 7.5 years ago and the first vacation we ever got to take was to Disney this past summer- so we are overdue for some relaxation. We also want to adopt so we will have to start saving for that as well.

I take written boards in May and defend my Masters thesis in June. I am hoping for another easy baby so that these tasks are not as difficult as they are seeming right now!
  • Love this idea!

I'm in pharmacy school and will graduate in May. Thankfully I only have 2 one-month rotations left in March and April.

  • I'm usually a lurker but I love this idea. I'm currently getting my BS in dietetics with a minor in French. I am set to graduate in May 2015. Currently taking 2 classes (6 credits) but will have a full plate from now until graduation.
  • Following along with interest!

I am a community college professor, hoping to complete some training during maternity leave myself, but also watching this thread to see what mothers need.  I do a lot of advising, and many many of my students have children.  I'm always looking for ways to help them better manage school and life.

No day in particular. Classes are every other Fri/Sat, so I should be able to do a quick check-in during the week.

  • I also think this is a cool idea! I'm working on my masters in Elementary School Administration. I just started last fall and won't graduate until Summer 2015. I have classes one day a week from 5-10, and I'm due on the 26th. My plan is to take a few weeks off, but then go back and finish this semester. I'd love to connect with other moms who need some support while going to school with a newborn as well!

  • I am getting a second masters degree in School Library Science to keep my current position of Media Specialist. I will be finished in spring 2015. I got really lucky this semester (even though it is completely all online) because we aren't required to have very many synchronous mtgs. I only have to meet with my group online about four times and the other class is completely on my own time. This summer, I will not have any classes at all. I have a masters degree in elementary education but shortly after finishing that, I wanted to take a break from the classroom when this position came open. I still have an inside baby until Wed morning when I will be induced so I am trying to get as much homework done as possible right now.
