So DD has reflux and is a terribly gassy little thing. I try to burp her but I don't usually get a burp just mass amounts of spit up or nothing at all. How do you hold DC to burp them? And how long do you try to get them to burp?
We try sitting DD on our knee at a 45 degree angle, supporting under her chin and patting her back. We also try over the shoulder patting and rubbing her back. It really just depends on the feeding which works best for her.
In addition to the positions described by pp above, I also read in Happiest Baby on the Block to gently bounce them on your knee a bit before you burp to loosen up bubbles (or something like that) - it actually works for us most of the time.
If LO eats for a long time, sometimes she gets upset when I burp her over the shoulder (maybe because her tummy is full?) I burp her holding her up by the chin on my lap when that happens.
What does everyone else do when LO gets all pissy when you are trying to burp them? Give up or keep going?
I usually keep going. I've found if she gets fussy and wiggles around its because a really big burp is working its way up and usually happens a few pats later, or she projectile vomits everything she just ate.
Disclaimer: LO spits up a ton and only big burps if she burps at all. If yours isn't the same then I'm not sure if this would help you.
My LO has a hard time burping and has reflux as well. I pat LO about 70 times on the top of his back (yes I count) then I rub from the small of his back up to his neck (upward not downward) then I bounce him on my knee and voila! The long awaited burp!
We get pretty good results by sitting him up and supporting under the chin with one hand and patting with the other.
We use to do this with my twins, they had reflux and spit up massive amounts. It worked to sit them up but also helped so we didn't get the spit up shower.

Thanks for this suggestion! I tried this last night and she finally burped right away and was far less fussy.
