Making strange

Help!
I don't know what to do anymore. DD makes strange so bad I almost feel sick to my stomach when I have to take her out. As soon as she lays eyes or someone looks at her (this is especially during grocery shopping) she cries her head off and doesn't stop until we are home. I'm at a loss of what to do. Just leaving her him with someone isn't always an option since DH works long hours.

  • They cry at strangers and also family members and friend they should know but babies don't have a good enough memory to remember them.

  • I had to Google it and discovered it's a real thing. I've just never heard that phrase before.

  • I know it's a phase but holy smokes we are on month 4 of it. I don't know how much longer it lasts.

  • It has to be a regional term. OP are you a Canuck?

  • My mom uses this phrase, she is from nj, but I think it is more a generational lingo difference.

    Yes I am!
Me too!!! :) and I knew what it meant! My grandma, mom, MIL all use it! lol

  • Now that I know what you mean, my LO has stranger anxiety too. She will burst into tears if someone tries to talk to her that she doesn't know. It's just a phase and will wear off as LO gets older. I don't worry about it. I just say "oh she's tired" or something like that so they don't feel too bad.

    **DD2 - 4/30/13**

  • My MIL used to say DS1 was strange when he had stranger anxiety. OP it will pass. DS1 had it for months but smiles at everyone now.
  • I wonder who decided to call it "making strange"

I am Canadian too and I always call it that as well. I assumed everyone did. Guess not.

A is also making strange and has no sign of stopping. She started at about 4 months and is 7 months now. My boys weren't quite like this.

Edit I feel bad for her because I hate when she is scared or upset but I know one day she will get past it.

Me too!  I hear it all the time and use it as well.

As for your op I have no advice :(  I hope it gets better for her tho!

  • Hopefully it is a phase that will pass. My son likes everyone but put him in the arms of a rough talking man and he's just pitiful.

  • I'm Canadian and have heard this term but mostly from the older generation. I find it weird.

I don't really have any suggestions though! Hopefully it's a phase she gets over quick. My LO needs a few minutes to warm up anytime we go somewhere.

I think what you are referring to with stranger danger is the term often used when teaching children about dangerous strangers like someone asking you to help find their lost puppy or come here I have candy for you type things. I have always referred to the other as making strange.

  • No we call it stranger danger because it is the desired response that we teach toddlers and kids but exhibited in a baby.
