Pumping, have you heard this?

I'm having supply issues. The friend of a friend said her LC told her that she will get more output if she alternates the letdown settings and the full suction setting every 30 to 60 seconds the whole time she's pumping. Is there any truth to this? I feel like if this was the case, more people would suggest it.

On a more personal note, is there any benefit to renting a Medela Symphony if I only turn my PISA up half way? I'm trying to decide if I should rent one. I only have one bag of milk left in the freezer, and I'm only pumping half of what she needs at work everyday.

  • Playing with the settings can definitely net more milk.

I only turn my Ameda up 1/4 of the way, but if I use the hospital grade at work I fill a bottle in no time. I definitely drain more ducts with the hospital grade. However, it's tough on my nipples so I only use it 1x a day and use my own pump the other two.

  • I used to reset my medala to letdown mode after my letdown would finish. I don't know if it got me more milk but it did decrease the time between let downs when I pumped.

Is the main benefit of the Symphony that it empties faster? Or that it gets more milk out? I'm really trying to decide (soon) if I should rent one to leave at work, at least until I can get my supply back up and more milk in the freezer.

Edit: to tag @theresat858 @casey78 @snoopyluv ... Since you all mentioned using hospital grade pumps before.

  • I also only get about 1/2 of what I need pumping at work. I opted to add a MOTN pump since my LO STTN. GL!

Oh man, if she'd STTN, I'd gladly get up to pump once! I have a feeling I'll probably do that in the future if/when she starts sleeping longer.

I just started fenugreek and motherlove more milk plus last night (alternating). Hoping I can get a little boost soon or I'm going to be completely out of milk on Wednesday :(

  • I use a Symphony (hospital grade) at work and an Ameda (commercial grade) at home.  The Symphony is a bit gentler on my nips when set at the same suction strength as the Ameda.  I actually get the same amount of milk out them, I just get it a bit faster from the Symphony.

Are you sure you're using the right size flanges?  I got an extra ounce per session when I changed flange sizes around 4 months PP.  (My nips actually changed sizes aroundn 3.5 months PP.)

  • @CLLDLL I think I am? Honestly, I'm not sure. I'm using 24s. I have a small ring of swelling at the base of my nipple when I'm done pumping that goes away before the next pump. My LO is 4.5mos.

  • You want your nips to move freely in the flanges without rubbing on the sides.  You also don't want a ton of space between your nip and the flange.  I like this website to give you an idea of what it should look like:

If you are having swelling, I would guess your flanges might be a bit too big and are pulling in areola when you pump.
