Fungal diaper rash

Lo has had a diaper rash for three weeks now. It doesn't seem to bother him or be painful. I originally purchased a&d with zinc which didn't work. I suspected it might be fungal based on online research. I took him to doc who recommended triple paste and to out a & d over it. Did nothing...she then perscribed Nystatin which made it go away but now it's come back. Ugh. I'm keeping the area dry. I'm putting the cream on religiously. I don't know what else to do. The doc said to continue what I'm doin which I will...any other suggestions welcome.

Re: Fungal diaper rash

  • Do you think you have thrush?  If you do, you'll just keep reinfecting LO (assuming you BF).

If you don't BF, keep doing what you're doing like the doc said.  Maybe think about probiotics for LO.

  • I use clotrimazole cream which is antifungal cream you will find it in the isle for athletes foot cream (same thing). I then layer the purple tube of desitin over it, I like the purple because it's thicker and stays on longer. The creams should clear up the rash with in a day or two.

I would also try a different diaper, your diapers might not be wicking the moisture away enough. We started using pampers (the regular kind) and my little man got a rash that I had a really hard time getting rid of, we switched to pampers swaddlers and have had no problem since.
  • I did the athletes foot cream too, with desitin on top. Cleared it up in a day or two!

  • We used the nystatin cream for 3 weeks. We also dried the area with a washcloth after using the baby wipes to clean his poop up. We also found that Pampers Swaddlers trigger a rash as well for our guy. Definitely try another diaper as well as it can contribute to the rash.

The pedi said no that it wasn't thrush. I am EPP. I felt like she is wrong though but she seemed confidant.

How long did you use the nystatin for?  We were told to use the yeast treatment for at least a week after symptoms disappeared so it didn't recur.  And I used monistat 7 day cream (not the quicker formulas) on LO at every changing then put aquaphor on top when I treated it.

We've used it for over a week now.

We use swaddlers. I thought thy were the best.

This is my next step. Thanks or the help guys. Hopefully the athletes foot works. I'm afraid to switch from swaddlers for some reason. It's dumb but I don't know where to go from swaddlers.
  • Try a diaper with zero scent. Also no wipes. Use a damp paper towel. Ours had a nasty rash and it was our wipes.

  • Try Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive -- sounds like you are using the regular Swaddlers? If it's the one with the Dry Max they are notorious for causing rashes in LOs with sensitive skin -- DD1 got a terrible rash from the Swaddlers w/Dry Max. Switched to Swaddlers Sensitive and never had a problem since.

  • I'm using regular swaddlers. I'll try sensitive. Thank you.
  • Triple paste is what I used first. It did nothing.

There is triple paste and triple paste AF. The regular one does not have an antifungal.
Shut the front door! Imagine if I had the regular. I have to check omg I'll be so pissed.
The pedi just said triple paste (Which I had never heard of) she never specified.

Update: I just checked it was AF.

We don't use disposables often, but the kind we bought last time we traveled was seventh generation (the target diapers we had used gave our son a rash) and they worked well.

I second using just a paper towel and water instead of wipes.

Maybe I have to try these. I just assumed that the less "stuff" diapers had in them the less effective. I'd rather have no diaper rash though. I freeking hate seeing it. Makes me sad although it doesn't seem to bother him.
