How much to pump

I know every baby is different, but I'm switching to pumping only and LO is only a week old. How much do they normal eat per sitting at this age? I'm thinking I should be ok to pump 2oz per bottle. What are your thoughts?

Re: How much to pump

  • What is making you decide to EP? Like PP said, EPing Is very challenging. I'm not sure on the volume. Someone else might have a better idea, or call your pedi.

  • LO is not latching properly. My nipples are too sore to get him on at this point. Can I ask why EP is such a challenge? I am a FTM here so any suggestions woul be great!

I would also recommend seeing an LC. Have you tried a nipple shield? The gel pads might help soothe your nipples, too. For me, breastfeeding was very uncomfortable for about six weeks and then it all got better from there and now we're at 5.5 months EBF! I used Lansinoh cream and took Advil pretty regularly for the first few weeks. Now, I pump for work a couple of times a day, and the routine just gets old. Being hooked up to a machine and washing parts is not fun and it's not something I would want to do five times a day (or however often EPers have to do it - much more frequently in the early months!). Hang in there! This board provides great support.
  • Thanks for the advice ladies. We only intend to BF for the first two months and then switch to formula. This will be the best thing for when I go back to work. I will continue to pump until then.
  • I would give you some reasons why it's better to try to fix the latch and not EP, but if you only want to give BM for 2 months, it's probably not that big of a deal. I'd pump every 2hrs still, though. I wouldn't be too concerned about an oversupply, since you can freeze your extra and use it to mix with formula to help give your LO some more time with BM when you return to work.

  • I EP with my youngest and with my first. It's a huge commitment and you have to be dedicated 100%. I EP bc neither of my LO's could latch properly and the shields did nothing for us. As of right now I have a pretty good supply, but I barely made it 6 months with my first. I would choose to EP only as a last resort.

As for bottle amounts 2 oz is probably okay for now. My DS just turned 3 weeks and he eats approximately 3-4 oz. per feeding.

  • I'm currently EP due to my twins being in the NICU. I was told by my LC to set my goal to pump 8 times in 24 hours. Sometimes it's 2 hours in between and sometimes it's 4 hours but I always get in 8 pumpings. Good luck!
