Sleep training & big boy bed

I'm currently sleep training my 28 month old son into his big boy bed (he's gotten in the habit of sleeping with me. Horrible, I know, but his daddy deployed and we moved home so it was his comfort thing) He has no problem sitting and reading in his bed during the day, but come night time he won't stay. I've tried everything aside from keeping him in his room and letting him do his own thing until he falls asleep, which is what I'm currently trying. We do a bedtime routine; bath, stories and the same cd he's listened to since he was born, but he won't go to sleep. He's been going to sleep at 11 when I put him to bed at 8. My problem is- he doesn't necessarily cry in his room, but he tries to get me to come get him by saying "mommy potty. please" over and over. At first I would take him, but quickly realized it was a clever trick on his part since he knew how seriously I took him saying he needed to use the potty. I don't want him to get his way and get out of the room, but I also don't want him to say he has to go potty just to get what he wants so I won't know when he really needs to go. Any advice?

Re: Sleep training & big boy bed

  • I haven't dealt with this myself, but a friend did. She would bring the training toilet in his bedroom when he said he needed to go. He went potty in the dark, then straight back to bed - no reading or singing or cuddles from mom (or dad). She said he got over the false alarms pretty quickly as it wasn't "fun".
