Night weaning help!

So my DD is 16 months old and still waking up 1-2 times a night to nurse. I'm beyond exhausted and pretty sure it's just for comfort at this point. She isn't a big eater during the day and usually only nurses in the morning and at bedtime.

I would really like to cut out the night feelings but I'm not really sure the best way to go about it. I'm not big on CIO so thats really not an option. Any advice on night weaning with CIO?

  • My husband works shift work so he works nights 7 nights a month but he has an 8 day break every month so we are going to try him going in when his break starts!

As far as CIO Im totally okay with some crying and I know I will probably have to do it at this point! It just makes me feel bad bc nursing at night is all she has ever known! I'm probably being overly dramatic about that though! Ha!
I'm going to try the dad and sippy of water thing and see how that goes! I'm totally new to this bc DD1 STTN at 13 weeks and self weaned very early!
Thanks for the advice ladies! I appreciate it! :-)
  • Thank you for bringing this up... I am going through the same thing with my 13 month old and stressing how to start weaning him when we are together during the day and also at night. He takes a sippy no problem with milk when I am at work and even was fine for 3 nights while I traveled last week. I thought he'd forget about the boob while I was gone but he was very insistent when I came home that he wanted to nurse. I am hoping to be completely done in the next 2 months but feel bad about taking away his comfort. It just breaks my heart. Will try your suggestions and read the articles posted too.
Glad to know know I am not the only one going through this. :)

  • We night weaned at 14.5m since I was just flat out tired of not sleeping more than a few hours of a time. I knew he didn't need to eat since he was gaining weight fine, so we went for it.

We sent DH in instead of me. DH picked up if he was super duper upset. Otherwise, he laid him back down (he stands whenever he wakes) and sat in a chair near his crib, telling him he is safe or patting his back as needed.

He didn't cry too much, but it did take three weeks for him to finally sleep through the night.... and now he is waking up at 2:30 and up for the day at 5:30. So we have a little ways to go, but at least when he wakes up he doesn't have to be nursed.
