How to help with colds?

My DD is almost 4 months and has cold symptoms ( DH also has a cold) no fever but she is already having some trouble sleeping with the congestion. We elevated her crib but it's not making much of a difference. Should I put her in rock n play tonight or will that mess up our success with crib so far? We have humidifier going but any other tips for the night until we can call doctor in AM?

  • Baby Tylenol will help her sleep.
Nose Frida with saline to clear her up

  • My LO hasn't had a cold yet but if it were me id put LO in the rock n play to sleep. Rest is important to help your LO get better and if it means a couple rough nights in the crib to readjust afterwards than so be it.
I hope your LO feels better soon.

Saline drops and nasal aspirator, run a hot shower or bath and leave the fan off, and have lo in the room with you. Watch for changes in appetite, trouble breathing and any fever.

  • Thanks mommas, we switched to rnp in our room, using nose Frieda often and finally just got a 2 hour and 45 minute stretch of sleep which seemed like heaven compared to the earlier wake ups in crib. Hopefully she will get rid of this cold quickly and be back in her room with no problem! But glad for the support to use rnp when I was unsure!

  • There is a homeopathic Medicine called coryzalia that helps.

  • I wouldn't use Tylenol just to help her sleep though. I would only use it if she has a fever. Colds take time for them to get through. Good luck!

@CDmay2006 what if the appetites change? My DD also had a cold and she hasn't been eating a heck of a lot, but she has been eating. Is that an underlying issue and something different?
You know, i'm not sure.  LO had a cold and this is what the pediatrician said... i didn't ask why.  He wasn't eating as well due to having a hard time breathing.

  • When DS had his first cold the Dr said to make sure he was drinking at least 75- 80% of his normal formula intake. Otherwise he would be at risk for dehydration. He was STTN in his crib prior to the cold, we had him sleep in our room in his swing till he could breath better. FWIW he went back to his crib no problem and instead of white noise we use his cool mist humidifier to soothe him.
  • Our LO naps in the RnP at daycare and sleeps in a crib at home. We use a crib wedge. He has no problem switching back and forth. Hopefully your LO will be the same!
