Vent...with PIP of my squishy!

At our hospital, if you decide to breastfeed, you must see a LC before you can be discharged. Sounds good, right? Well, the lady who does it is a bitch! I think part of her problem is her age. She'll never retire because she sees her job as too important, like a Crusade.

So she came in today, and without asking, started talking to us like this was Baby Number 1. And I have no clue what breastfeeding is. We finally get that straightened out. Next, she goes on to tell me instructions to do at home. Again and again and again and again...(breath)...and again and again. Seriously. Then Scarlett woke up, and Mrs Nosy gets right up in our business to check how she's doing. We had just done a weight check, Scarlett gained 2 oz after feeding AND the removal of a poopy diaper.

Anyway...the ^ahem^ lady is stressing me out at this point, and Scarlett decides to not really nurse. Not well at all, with my milk in. This woman forced Scarlett to latch, making Scarlett cry and stressing her out. HOW IS THIS HELPFUL???????? Anyway, while trying to get Scarlett calmed down enough to latch on her own, the bitch tells me what to do at home AGAIN! And insists that we leave soon so that we can get home to nurse, pump, bottle feed ASAP!

She didn't leave the room for another half hour. And wouldn't leave until she was sure we'd have a pump before we left the hospital and that we'd go home right away.

The worst part of this, is that she is the same LC I saw at discharge with Ada, who ended up having some weight gain issues. Ada was born petite, so basically her mouth didn't fit my nipples. However, the LC basically said it was my fault that she couldn't latch and I need to do a better job as a mom making sure she got the food she needed. Yes, I purposely made my nipples that big.

Anyway, to avoid a repeat of Ada's back-and-forth appointments, I'm going to do everything to make sure she gains enough by the next time I see her- Monday.

Love the pics! That LC sounds like a pain in the rear! I had one nurse tell me to support the baby's head when I burped DS over and over. I finally told her that this wasn't my first rodeo and I got it. It was very aggravating! I personally would "forget" that I had to meet with her on Monday.

Can you complain (anonymously or not) about this woman? You may be able to brush her horrible bedside manner and overbearing ways off but I fear for vulnerable FTM (like myself). ETA:Punctuation is hard :-/

No, I cannot brush off the appointment on Monday. I do plan on sending something anonymously, though, about it. I'm so glad I'm not a 1TM, I don't think I'd breastfeed because of her.

Ugh how incredibly annoying. I'm sorry. We had a few nurses in the NICU that sound like your LC. Just breathe in and out before you go ape shit on her.

That is exactly why you need to say something and she needs new training. Her behavior is creating the exact opposite behavior of what she is trying to achieve.

Yikes, sorry the LC is a witch. Please tell her supervisor in a letter or verbally what a poor job she is doing. She really sounds terrible, and if you don't like her as a 4x mom, I can't imagine how FTMs handle her.

You're a patient woman because I would've kicked her behind out of my room and I would've complained to her reporting manager. She sounds like a crotchety old hag who really, really needs to retire. A good LC should be supportive and understanding, not condescending!

Yeah, my LC sucked, too. Friendly, but VERY ideological and not at all useful. Wafts in with elaborate perfume on, utters the classic line, "All mothers can breastfeed!" and then proceeds to demonstrate how to hand-express. Without asking. Lady, I might not know how to get my baby to latch, but I actually do know how to squeeze the colostrum out of myself. Totally NOT helpful. When she left, my husband blinked and said, "Does she, like, have a humanities degree or a science degree?" By which he meant that she didn't seem to know any science.

The evening-shift nurse a few hours later did a better job, but ultimately we just failed at latching. Right now, my son is on expressed breast milk, which is sort of OK and sort of a total pain. And the only reason I even figured out pumping is that the LC at the other hospital (long story) was practical, compassionate and did NOT run around hugging trees on the job.

I had one that sucked when I was in the hospital with DD. I had finally found a way that worked for us and she came in and took her off my boon because she didn't like it.

I'm sorry your LC is a witch. Is there another one you can ask for?

Yikes- I'm so sorry you have to deal with such a witch. Poor Scarlett shouldn't be traumatized by the very thing meant to nourish and comfort her just because the LC is impatient, old bat.

Is there any way you can change LCs?

So sorry about the LC. If there's no way you can explain the situation to her higher-ups, can you just grit your teeth, smile and nod through the appointment, and then just do what you were going to do anyway? Although I agree with pp, if possible another LC would be the best solution, but it sounded like that wasn't really an option from your OP.

Thanks, everyone! I think there is like 1 other LC that comes in, but I HAVE TO have the appointment Monday. I'll try calling and see if I can request someone else...but I don't think that they work that way. I will have something available to report, I'll never say it to her. Or I might. We'll just see what kind of day I'm having Monday....

So far, I've had to switch to pumping for Scarlett and giving her that. She seems to be a little on the small side to latch on, just like her sister. Pumping sucks

@JazElsMomma - I think she did lose 11% of her weight, but it's standard procedure for those planning to breastfeed to see a LC. No matter how many kids they have. Some of their policies are just...dumb. Like this one. I just wish they had more LCs available.

Do you have to go? Are they gonna call CPS if you don't go? Jeez. I would just cancel the appt asap. I'm sorry mama for going through a bitch LC. I had similar problems with Naiya latching and this old LC nurse tried to force her to latch when Naiya wasn't hungry, which cause a huge meltdown. Then she goes and says "oh she's not going to latch being all stress" No shit..
Anywho.. I love all your squishy photos! Looking good too mama

Update: I thought my appointment was today at 3:30. Well, at 11:20 I got a phone call. Oops, my appointment was at 11. But, since Scarlett had to see the pediatrician on Friday, and had gained a bit of weight (more than expected with losing 11% of birth weight, and "not latching well") all I did was a consult over the phone. I did not talk to the mean lady, it was someone else.

Yay, I saved me an hour trip through snow (each direction)! And the LC was fine with what I was doing (pumping, and bottle feeding that milk). We'll find out next week how much my adorable smoosh weighs

She's eating like a champ, so I'm really not concerned. I just hate pumping like this.
