BFing after Breast Cancer

Hi,

I'm new t this board and expecting twins.   I am just 31 weeks now but they will be here in a few weeks so I need to start thinking about this stuff.

I was lurking on the mulitples board and some recommended asking the BF board any all questions.   I didn't realize there was one!

My question is....  Are there any BC survivors out there who have successfully bf'd after treatment?  I had lumpectomy followed by radiation.  My cancer boob has not changed much during the pregnancy but my uneffected one is at least 2x th size.

I know that becaus eI am having multiples I will probably not be able to bf exclusively, But was wondering if I am going to be able to do it at all.

Just looking for input from others and their experiences.

Re: BFing after Breast Cancer

  • I have heard of mothers of multiples successfully EBF so I know it can be done if that's something your interested in doing. I have never had BC so I don't have anything else to share. I hope someone can give you some advice. Good luck and congrats on beating the cancer!

  • First of all congratulations on being a cancer survivor! As well as becoming a momma to twins! I have ten week old twin boys and I EBF them! In fact I EBF and pump so technically I could feed 3. And I had a very low supply in the being with one side producing little to nothing at all So it can be done! I have not had BC myself but my grandmother and mother are survivors my grandma successfully BF. It wasn't easy for her and she did supplement a little. From BF twins this would be my advice always tandem feed (it's tricky but once you get the hang of it, it becomes easy) switch them from side to side every time. The baby that is on the side of the less fuller breast offer him the supplemental bottle of donated milk, expressed milk of your own, or formula. Then the next feed do the same with the other baby. Who knows you may just be able to make enough and not need that bottle! You have milk glands from your collar bones to breast as well as back in your armpits so depending on how much tissue was removed even though one side looks fuller you may still have plenty of milk. Also don't get discourage with my singleton my milk came in day two with y twins it took 5 weeks to get my full supply and for what ever reason with multiples that's common. Fenugreek helps tons too. Really you will just have to test the waters and find a routine that works best for you and babies! I stressed so much over this and sure enough it all fell into place naturally. And really once babies are here don't be shy. Ask questions! The more you do the more confidence and knowledge you will gain and it will become easier! All you can do is try and see how it goes! GL!! Also don't ever judge your supply by what you pump because it's no indication of how much your making! I suggested weighted feeds then you will know how muh they are getting from the breast!
