How to BF once baby starts sleeping through the night?

Do I get up to pump, or should I sleep through the night too? Will either help/hurt my supply?

Re: How to BF once baby starts sleeping through the night?

  • Depends how old your baby is.  I used to wake up and pump w/my first DD because I felt I needed more milk for her during the day. (I was also anxious about my milk supply)  But with my second I never woke up to pump, and as she started STTN so did I!

You might be engorged in the morning but usually if your baby is old enough to STTN then your supply will adjust.

  • You should sleep. BF is based on supply and demand. If there's no demand during the night because the baby is sleeping, you don't need to pump unless you're trying to increase your milk supply.

  • Sleep!! You will feel full on the am, but enjoy the sleep for sure. If your LO begins to awake again in the night your supply will adjust again.

Exactly what I was going to say. LO will hit a growth spurt and possibly start waking up again at night. It changes all the time, but your body adjusts. When my DD started STTN, I hand expressed a little for a few nights when I woke up in pain. I needed to relieve a little, but didn't want to pump because then my body would think it needed to produce more milk. If you have to, just pump or hand express a little to relieve some pain.

  • Sleep for sure.

Don't be surprised if you wake up in a puddle of breast milk.

I didn't stop leaking during the night for a couple months!  But I still say sleep.

  • I agree with PPs. Sleep through the night. But, I highly recommend you pump one last time right before you go to bed. Freeze that milk to build your stash. That one extra bag a day adds up fast! Once you get your stash started, give your baby one bottle of your oldest frozen milk a day so that you keep your stash fresh. Then youll have two bags to freeze a day. I built up about 200 oz this way. My preference is not having any frozen milk older than 3 months, doing the daily rotation makes that happen.

For a week or two you'll be really engorged in the morning, but then your body will get used to not feeding MOTN and it gets bearable.

And, you shouldn't have any issue having enough milk if LO wakes up during the night.
