I know this is early but I am trying to head off any problems that might become bigger issues later. My 5 day old was able to successfully latch at 2-3 days. He doesn't get it on the first time every time but we are working on it. Now he has started new thing where he will make all the cues that he is hungry and I will try to feed him. He will latch for a mico-second then slide off or shake his head. Seemingly pushing the breast away but all the while his mouth and tongue are obviously looking for food. The more I try to feed him the more upset he gets until he is shrieking. Could I be holding him in a way that is uncomfortable? Usually after a while I can get him to nurse but by the time I get him to do 15-20 on one side he is too worn out to do the other...help!
Re: Fussy Latcher-Please Help
2. Try feeding earlier. Start your "timer" when they start at the breast and feed at least every 2hrs. Try 1 1/2hrs.
3. Try to hand express a little milk. Your LO may just be wanting an immediate response of milk. (Did your milk come in? If you had a c-section it may still be colstrum)
4. If you have a pump, you can try to pump a little to help start things up for your LO.
5. Is there a lactation consultant that you can see? They could be most helpful to you.
Good luck! I hope something helps.
