Big Head Baby!

Had my 36w growth scan today and I'm cursing at my husband and his big noggin'! Despite marginal cord and Papp-a, baby girl is in the 60th percentile! 6lbs 4oz but a head measuring 39w. My lady parts hurt just hearing that! Stopping the procardia on Sunday and then it's fair game!

Anyone else have a big headed also? How did that work out for you? Lol

  • My LO is also in the 75th percentile and his head is measuring two weeks ahead. Hoping all my hypnobirthing will help get him out! LoL!'!!!

  • My first did. 35 weeks and his head measured 39 weeks. I progressed to 9cm but he was still at a -3 position. During the c-section he was stuck and thats why he wasnt decending. Good luck!!! :)

A little bit of a thread jack -- but are you all getting these specific measurements with ultrasounds? I'm always hearing that's it's "normal" to not have an u/s after the anatomy scan but then I feel like I'm the only one without this kind of info! Another thread jack - @flightview did you have an u/s to check position because it was hard to tell just by pressing around on your belly? My OB can't tell how LO is positioned so she'll try to figure it out with cervical checks but said we may need a final ultrasound.
I haven't had any ultrasounds (and will not) since my 20 week anatomy scan.

  • Had a position check ultrasound due to him being in a bad position two weeks ago.

This week (we are at 35 exactly) his head was measuring 4 1/2 weeks ahead, in the 98th percentile. He is ahead (ha ha) with everything, but not quite as far as his noggin is.

I know this is going to sound strange, but don't forget that babies heads squish a bit during delivery to get through the birth canal. So it really depends more on your pelvis shape/size than that of the baby's head size.

That being said...good luck to us all anyway!

  • I have these extra ultrasounds at maternal fetal medicine because I'm high risk. My regular OB doesn't do them after 20 some weeks.

I have regular ultrasounds because of LO's heart issues.

With my DD, though, she measured a few weeks ahead at our 18-week anatomy scan, so my OB scheduled a growth scan for later on, at which she also measured really big, so I ended up having a couple growth scans.  It didn't change anything about the birth.  They estimated that she'd be about 10 pounds at my due date based on growth scans, and she ended up being 8 lbs 9 oz.

BFP #1 9/2010 (lost our baby at 21 weeks) BFP #2 8/2011 (ectopic pregnancy) BFP #3 10/2011 (chemical pregnancy) BFP #4 12/2011 (Abigail born 8/15/12) BFP #5 5/2013 (Griffin born 1/23/14 with heart defects, now repaired!)

  • I haven't had any official measurements or anything, but I'm pretty sure my LO will have a large head! My DH has never been able to wear hats because his head is so big. When he was a kid, he has to wear adult sized hockey helmets.
  • I have monthly growth scans because I'm high risk and last time they said her head is in the 91st percentile -- I'm a little scared!!!

  • DS1's head measured in the 90th percentile on U/S at 36 weeks.  But he was actually only in the 50th!  They can be way wrong.

  • My baby is measuring 97th percentile at 33 weeks. They said he weights 6 lb 13 oz. Ouch!!

I originally got an extra ultrasound at 26 weeks bc they saw marginal placenta previa at my 20 week anatomy scan. At my 26 week ultrasound they saw he was big and then wanted additional ultrasounds to track his growth. Now I'm getting weekly bpp scans and growth scans every 2 weeks until he is born.
  • I just had an u/s at 35 weeks and his head was measuring 39 weeks and in the 97th percentile

  • At my u/s on Thursday baby's head was normal, baby's belly on the other hand is in the 95 percentile - I'm having a sumo wrestler :)
  • The anatomy scan showed that our LO was in the 93 percentile. I dont get another scan so im pretty nervous.

  • I don't recall how DS's head was measuring at his anatomy scan but he sure had a big ass head when I gave birth. He made it through the birth canal and I only tore a little. But his head didn't fit into any of the hats I was given at my shower-- including hats my mom had made! This time around I am planning for another big headed boy and bought bigger size hats!

  • For those that haven't gotten an ultrasound after the anatomy scan, I am pretty sure that's completely normal. Most of us that have had further ultrasounds have had them for a reason.

I had a growth scan yesterday and LO was measuring a week ahead at 6 lb 12 oz (give or take 12 oz according to the tech, the u/s's aren't that accurate). She said it is a combo of 2 head measurements, the femur length, and something else I can't remember. I wish I had asked about the head specifically, because now I am curious! I have a feeling though that if anything, this baby will be tall, like my DH.
That's pretty close to what my LO was weighing! I'm on mobile so I can't see... How far along are you?

I'm also having the extra ultrasounds @ MFM bc of Papp-a. We did one at 30 wks and the doctor said baby girl's head " is perfectly round," but was concerned that she seemed to be measuring ahead by 2 wks. We go back for another ultrasound, to check growth, on 01/24. Do you go to the MFM in Columbia?

Yes! Right next to the hospital. There's one tech- she's blonde- who I can't stand. She huffs and puffs and seems to hate life/her job. I started requesting a different one! I just went yesterday and I'm officially done! I'm assuming that's where you go?! Are you delivering at HoCo?

Woah! That's no bueno. : / We've had 3 there so far, and they've been fine so far ... Knock on wood. Just irritated w/the doctor bc she's so concerned w/the size of baby that she's been having me panel my blood for the past 4 wks, and for the rest of the pregnancy (another 5 wks), but I have no dx of GD, formally, yet. I went to the dietary consult@ the diabetes ctr @HoCo Gen last wk, and they don't think I have GD. They think MFM is being overly cautious.

No, I'm not delivering@HoCo (but my regular ob-gyn before pregnancy was Signature, and I love them!). I wanted to go the birthing ctr route for our delivery. I've heard great things about delivering@HoCo though!! And my doula told us that she heard a rumor that they no longer separate mom & baby after birth, as of August.
  • Had a scan today, baby's head is OOR! Out of Range, 40 weeks plus already! Haha it ouch!! And I am 37 weeks 4 days right now!
