XP from Feb 14: Yeast infection and delivery

I had my 37 week appt today (I am currently 37w5d) and told the Dr I am pretty sure I have a yeast infection. Sure enough she checked and I do. She prescribed Terconozale and said it should clear up in 7 days.

Since I am so close to delivery she said if I have it, it could be passed to the baby and he may develop thrush (I know it's not a serious problem and can be treated with antibiotics after birth).

I'm just wondering if anyone has dealt with this before. Was postpartum healing worse? How long did it take for your LO to recover from thrush? Did they give you antibiotics during labor ( I forgot to ask her this) to try and help? TIA... I'm hoping he waits until it is cleared up to arrive but who knows at this point.

  • Yeast is a fungus so general antibiotics won't treat it, they actually will make it worse. Thrush is easy to treat with an oral version of nystatin usually.

  • I had one while we were attempting induction. Normally cervical checks don't bother me, but the combo of the cervidil, pit and misoprostol (which are all intended to basically irritate the cervix) and the YI, they were so painful. They gave me 1 dose of Diflucan and it was much better.
  • If he develops thrush and you have to treat him, make sure you treat your nipples if you breastfeed. Treating the baby's mouth without the nipple just passes it back and forth.
  • UGH! I've had a yeast infection that I can't shake for a couple weeks now. I've been on and off and on of the Clotrimazole. Problem is I can't tell I have one. I have no smell, no discharge, no nothing...but when my MW does a cervical check, she can tell. I'm really hoping it's gone now. I finished my last dose but had to do a short one because of my 24 hour urine catch. They didn't want the meds to interfere with the catch.

Anyway they told me baby could get thrush as she comes through the birth canal. I'm guessing if I had a CS, it wouldn't be a concern. I didn't even think about the treating the nipples stuff. So glad PP mentioned that. UGH! Hoping it goes away for both of us!

  • Thank you ladies. This is the worst yeast infection I've ever had. I really hope it clears up before LO arrives. I'm glad to know it can be easily treated afterwards if LO does get thrush and I can maybe find relief shortly after delivery as well.
