Ear infections

My dd has gotten one so far and I know it is because of how she drinks her bottle. I try to hold her with her head elevated and she gets so mad and starts arching her back to roll away from me. So I try to prop her up on the floor with pillows so that her head stays elevated and she rolls off of them until she is laying flat on the floor. I know that her laying flat like that and drinking her bottle can cause fluid to get trapped in her ear canal and cause an infection. It was a nightmare last time she got one and I've been trying to make sure she doesn't eat like that but she will seriously fight me no matter how much I try and if I make her mad enough she throws the bottle and just gives up. Ahh!! Any tips or advice?

Re: Ear infections

  • Do you have a swing or bouncer you can put her in?  DD loves her bouncer and will bounce away with her bottle in her mouth.  I don't know how she manages that.  And when she's in her swing her head is elevated.  Is your LO sitting up yet?  If so, you can sit her on the floor or in her highchair and give her her bottles there.

  • We are dealing with recurrent ear infections with my son, and talking of tubes, so I am desperate for things to do to help. Per my ped, there isn't much to be done. The idea that bottle position can cause ear infections is somewhat supported, but not usually the causative factor, per my pediatrician. The shape of the eustachean tube is the by far most critical indicator, and a common cold often leads to ear infections due to pooling of secretions. Fluid trapped in the ear does not cause ear infections unless there were previous infections or injuries that caused a hole in the ear drum.

IMO, let her eat the way she wants to.
