Higher than average weight at 20 week scan

So I just had my 20 week anatomy scan , and baby is 14 oz. He should be 10.2 according to the average data on here! I'm worried this may be a sign of gestational diabetes, but my test isn't for another month.

Does anyone have experience with this from previous pregnancies? Did you end up with gestational diabeties and/or a large baby? I was never told my fundal measurements or weight gain is high.

Re: Higher than average weight at 20 week scan

  • I just had mine yesterday and my baby weighs 14 oz too! The sonographer didn't seem worried...at all. So I'm just assuming I have a big ol' baby on the way :)

  • With my two sons, they always measured bigger and I didn't have GD. I always just took it as having bigger babies. I don't know about this one yet, my a/s is Monday.

  • I don't think anything is wrong with that. This baby was 12 oz. at 20 weeks and DS was 13 oz at 20 weeks.

  • I wouldn't take the average data on a site like this as fact, personally. Plus average means that there are numbers higher and lower than that as well. Also remember that your "due date" is an estimate in itself, so it could just be an indication that your baby is a tiny bit further along than originally thought. Whatever the case, I wouldn't worry, unless your doctor brings it up as a concern. 2 ounces is not very much...

@shellbell813 I came here to see that you beat me to it. Its all estimates and in my experience, the 'weights' are never right.

  • Thanks for the reassurance ladies! I went somewhere else for the scan, so I haven't talked to my doc about it yet. But you all are putting my mind at ease ;;)
  • DS measured big all along and i didn't have GD. THis baby is measuring big as well. I think DH and I just make big babies. :)
Don't stress, see what your glucose tests shows and go from there.

  • I wouldn't worry about a few ounces at this point. Baby could've just had a growth spurt or something. My other two babies measured ahead at the dating u/s and again at the a/s, and both were about 7.5 lb. It's not an indicator of anything at this point.

  • I didn't get my measurements but the sonographer told me that babies grow at different speeds and its impossible to know if they will be bigger than normal or not until like 36 weeks.

My son was 13oz at 20 weeks. No GD but he was born at 39 weeks and weight 9lbs and 4oz and measured 22 in. He was a big boy! But at 20 weeks, there was no real indication of this, it can all even out by then.

  • I would think if your doctor was concerned about baby's size they would have mentioned it...or if they felt GD was a possibility they would have moved up the test.

  • My DS measured big my entire pregnancy. When I had my C-section at 40w, 2 day my OB pulled him out and said "WHOA!" He was 9 lbs, 4 oz. Thank goodness, never had gestational diabetes. This one is measuring about 10 days ahead of schedule as well.

  • My cousin who is due in March just went through this. At her 20 week appt the baby measured abnormally large and the doctor prepared her for GD being a possibility. I think most of my family just assumed that would be the outcome too. However, now at 30 weeks, she just had her second GD testing done and the results came back negative, so she is in the clear. Baby is still measuring large but not enough to rush to schedule delivery, so I agree with all the PP's that the measurements are mostly estimates and very from baby-to-baby...and I wouldn't worry too much about the outcome being a 10lb baby...

  • If your OB isn't worried then it's probably fine. At 19w5d each of my twins was 11oz which is more than average for that gestation, especially since there's two.

  • Don't put too much stock into weights that you are given based on ultrasound. More often than not, they aren't accurate (they can go 1lb in either direction), and you'll just worry yourself on all of the "what-ifs". Weight will fluctuate also throughout the duration of the pregnancy, and any given week can increase or decrease a little, and that doesn't mean there is anything to be worried about.

  • My doctor doesn't even regard those kinds of measurements unless a baby is measuring severely small, etc. Besides, they're just averages for gestational age. My husband and I are short people so we expect small babies, etc. I wouldn't sweat it.

  • This post made me feel better!! I was having the same concerns (but don't go to the doctor until Tuseday).  Baby was measured at 11oz at my U/S yesterday but I'm only 19w5d.

  • Ditto PPs.  I don't think you have anything to worry about.  I was warned with both of my previous babies that they would be over 9.5 lbs (these were ultrasounds later in the pregnancies), but one was 8-1 and one was 8-5.
  • Don't worry I Just went And found out I'm having a girl! :) but she is 12.5 oz and said she's healthy so I don't think you should worry.
  • I'm also 20 weeks
  • I had my 20 week on Wednesday and mine measured 16 oz!!! I have only gained about 9 lbs so far so I think it will just be a big baby which is not surprising since my husband was born at 9lbs 15 oz and I was 9lbs 2oz!! I wouldn't worry unless your doctor mentions it. If they are concerned they will let you know.

DD was measuring large my whole pregnancy. No GD but they were planning on inducing me 10 days early due to size. I ended up being induced at 38 weeks due to pre-e. DD was 7.9 lbs at birth, so not quite as big as they assumed but still a good size for her gestation!
  • My boys were 11oz and 12oz at 19w5d :) they did not seemed worried at all. They are higher than the "average" even being twins!

  • They didn't tell us any measurements at the 20 wk scan...just it is all looking good and due date didn't change...guess no news is good news?!! Lol :-) I wouldn't worry unless the doc brings it up and is concerned. Good luck!
  • Is it wrong that my sonographer didn't even tell me how much my baby weighs????

This.  We got a 12oz measurement a week ago, too.

  • If your doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either.
  • I had my 20 weeks and my baby was 14 oz's too. Sonographer and Dr were not concerned at all. They said sometimes they have a growth spurt or grow a lot in the beginning and then even out- nothing to worry about.
  • At 19 weeks, ours was measuring 13oz. The tech just said he's measuring about a week ahead of schedule but the due date didn't change. I was worried at first, but then remembered he was ounces over the "average" not pounds! :)

  • My guy is measuring ahead as well.  My last baby was 10 pounds though so I just grow them big.  No GD in either prior pregnancy.

It's not something to worry so much about.  1. it's an estimate.  2. babies grow at different rates - your baby may have just had a growth spurt 3. some baby has to be above average because that's how averages work!
