LO had a pedi appt this morning, and he was wide awake, alert, and busy. She commented about it, then asked me if ADD runs in the family. After seeing the look on my face, she told me it was way too early to diagnose, but she has noticed that overly busy babies tend to be the ones diagnosed with ADD later in childhood.

LOL You can't truly Dx until they school age...maybe she's just going ion personal experience with her patients? It isn't a bitchy thing to say, bc having ADD isn't a horrible thing. It's not like she called your baby fat.

I'm much more flabbergasted than I am worried. The boy loves faces, bright lights, and my voice high-pitched. He takes interest in things.

Maybe not bitchy, but not something I'd ever imagine hearing about a one month old. ADD isn't a horrible thing, but it's not easy, and such a remark could cause a lot of unnecessary worry for a new mom.

Talk about making generalizations. Not all people with ADHD/ADD are hyper either so it's not even a good indicator. Some children/people lack focus and are inattentive only.

ETA: most people are diagnosed until after age 5 or later in school when symptoms really start to show. Like pp's said

Please someone correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the H in ADHD stand for hyperactivity? So if you have ADHD you are hyper and if you have ADD you are not?

Well, as somebody who has ADHD and has a child with it, it's just such a non-issue in the long run, I find it hard to get up in arms about being told my child might have it. It's such a silly thing to say about a baby, I would have just laughed.

Correct. My sister and my DF have ADHD and never settle down. (DF has to pace all the time because he won't take meds and it's the only way he knows how to cope) I have ADD and I just take off ramps in conversations and get distracted very easily. I can sit still for long periods.

Tell her not to worry because you drank moderately during pregnancy.

There was a study from Europe(I think) that said that drinking in moderation during pregnancy resulted in fewer cases of ADD. I have no idea how valid that research was. I showed the article to dh (who has ADD) when I was pregnant and he got me a glass of wine.
