movement has gotten PAINFUL!

My baby girl is breech with her head right below my ribs and she likes to push it out against my uterus as hard as possible for a hour or so multiple times per day. It's gotten to the point where it's extremely painful. Twice (once yesterday and once the day before) I had times where it was so painful I thought I would throw up or cry. Once she would move I'd be pretty sore, but not in intolerable pain. To be fair, I think the place where she's pushing is almost the same where I had an ab issue for 1-2 years before getting pregnant (convenient of her, huh?), but GEEZ IT HURTS.  I still love feeling her move around and watching giant lumps protrude out of my stomach, but I wish she'd calm it a bit with her giant (91st percentile) head. Anyone else experiencing similar pain?  I'll mention it to the OB on Monday, but I assume there's nothing I can do, since she's been in that position forever.

Re: movement has gotten PAINFUL!

  • I think mine has been head-down for a long time, but there was a period several weeks ago when the feet in the ribs would almost make me cry. I couldn't sit longer than half an hour without feeling like I was being stabbed. The fine ladies here suggested crawling around on all fours to let gravity help shift the baby to a new position. It really helped me. I was crawling around on the floor at least twice a day for a couple weeks straight. Once in the bathroom (on paper towels) during a break in our birthing class... desperate times.

Yoga has also helped me in general -- any kind of stretching like that.

How far along are you? The doctor might suggest some of the "spinning" techniques to see if you can get baby head down. I don't personally know a lot about that, though.
Thanks!  Sorry, meant to add that I'm 34 weeks today. While in theory, I know there is time for her to move, she's been breech the entire pregnancy and is now quite big, so I'm not too confident about her moving, though she may surprise me!

I may try the all-fours thing. I've done that some out of necessity around the house (because getting up and down off the floor is hard!), but she's still stuck in her spot.

  • Do exercises/stretches to open up your pelvic region.  Pelvic tilts and the cat/cow stretch help.  Also, get on all fours but use your elbows instead of your hands.  My LO was breech until recently, so maybe that stuff helped.  Oh, and I spend 30 minutes a day on a yoga ball too.
  • Mine has been breeched/transverse this entire pregnancy. At my 36 week appointment, head down. Don't give up hope!!

  • Actually, it kind of sounds like she is trying to get herself out of that position so I think you might have some luck with the spinning babies techniques or the crawling on the floor.  A few weeks ago, I was sent to L&D and baby was stuck in a weird position- head down but kind of stuck to the right with her head turned way out to the side?  Hard to explain even after seeing it on ultrasound!  Anyway, 2 days later, the movements got super painful and intense and I was having to grab on to furniture for support and couldn't sit/lie down... finally she got herself adjusted and back into the correct position and things were much more comfortable.  So don't give up hope!

  • I hope she turns for you! My little one made the turn right around that point- so don't give up hope! Now though she enjoys kicking me super hard and pushing her butt out to one side. It can get pretty dang uncomfortable and at times down right painful. I agree, I love feeling her move and wouldn't want her to stop but I have tried pleadingly to ask her not to kick quite sooo hard or push against the side of my stomach sooo much. I haven't found anything that works well other than changing positions- and that only sometimes works. I am at 37.5 weeks right now so I am hoping that she might be moving around to get into place for the big day (maybe soon?).
  • I wish you luck.  My future child moves from breech to where she is supposed to be.  I can always tell when she has moved back to breech because it hurts more.  You have my extreme sympathy. Good luck.

  • I'm glad to hear that others are experiencing this, i.e. that it's normal, not that you're also in pain!

Aww, this makes me feel kind of bad!  I was always ok with her being breech because I thought she liked it there and was comfortable. But now I feel bad for her if she's trying to change positions but is having trouble :(  Hopefully she'll get nice and comfy soon.

  • My LO was transverse, and it really hurt sometimes. Luckily he or she moved last week, at 35 weeks. My midwife recommended sitting on the exercise ball. I also tried inversion like on spinning babies. I'm not sure which made it flip, or if it's just a coincidence, but it doesn't hurt to try.

  • I hope your LO flips for you!  Mine has been head down for quite a while now...but he LOVES kicking me super hard in the stomach/lungs while simultaneously pushing out really hard with his butt and down into my pelvic bones with his shoulders...OUCH!

  • I have the same problem! I'm 35 weeks and LO is breech with her head way up by my right boob. I've started baby spinning inversions and going to get a yoga ball this weekend. She's so stuck up in there my ribs hurt front and back. Here's hoping everybody gets the picture and behaves and goes head down! There's still time!
