Video interview tips

I have a video interview coming up for a position I am barely qualified for. What are your tips for video call interviews? And does anyone have any good tips for interviewing for a position you are barely qualified for? Obviously I'm qualified enough or they wouldn't have called for an interview, but I have only had the minimum years of experience they desire and have no experience doing many if the job duties at all. Any other general interviewing tips or questions you know they will ask? This is my first time interviewing for a non entry level position. Thanks!

Re: Video interview tips

  • With regard to the video interviewing question, make sure to test your phone/computer first.  My friend did a Skype interview on her computer, which ended up doing an install-updates-and-shutdown in the middle of it.  She happened to have a Skype app on her phone, but found that she needed headphones to hear the conversation.  Dress like you would for an in-person interview, and make sure you're in a well-lit, quiet environment that does not have a lot of "busy" items in the background.

With regard to your qualifications question, focus on your strengths and projects you have worked on that show you are capable of doing the work of the job you're interviewing for.

    Good luck!!

  • Excellent advice from PP.  Also eliminate background noise.  I used to conduct video interviews and was always amazed at how often cell phones would ring or I could hear the dishwasher/washing machine running in the background.

I conduct video interviews often. Pp's had good advice. Note that sometimes there is a few second delay so you may feel like you are interrupting but you will get used to it quickly. As far as being inexperienced, make sure you have lots of examples in your mind of things you have accomplished that you are proud of, difficult situations you have handled well, challenges and obstacles you have overcome etc. this way when they ask you if you have done x, y, or z, you will be prepared to say you have not, however, you have dealt with such and such that parlays into what they are asking you about. Good luck!
  • Good points above. I would add: Make sure the camera is eye level or pointed slightly downward toward you. If the camera is low, it'll make you look a little distorted. Whenever that happens, I catch a glimpse of my suddenly- huge double-chin and get totally distracted!
  • Along the "distracted" lines, I had two video interviews for my current position and I was new to the concept at the time. I discovered that it is EASY to get distracted on a video interview and I had to really work hard to mentally focus on the questions being asked to give relevant answers and not ramble. Just bear that in mind and be ready to buckle down your listening skills since you won't have the pressure of them being in the room with you. And of course don't be afraid to ask them to repeat the questions rather than guess at what they asked!!
