Pumpers/Breastfeeders...WHERE ARE YOU!?!?

So... I am a little nervous! I pumped this morning for 15-20mins. and DID.NOT have a let down Indifferent

In the history of me breastfeeding/pumping this has NEVER happened (I normally can get 10-12oz. in 15-20mins. in the am). Is this a sign that my supply is tanking? I have noticed that over the past month it has slightly gone down, and I have been just pumping enough to keep up with what DS eats at daycare. AND last week AF visited me for the first time post-partum.

I'm getting sad... I really wanted to have the choice to stop breastfeeding NOT because my body gave up. Perhaps I am overreacting, but I am really bummed/nervous/sad.

  • I heard AF may temporarily cause your supply to let up...try again in 2 hours!

  • WOW! I would be lucky to get 4oz in a pump!

I had this happen to me once. I was really stressed out and pumped for about 20 minutes and never had a let down. It has not happened since.

  • I'd doublecheck your pump and make sure everything is ok.

My pumping output has been dwindling but I have always gotten a letdown.  But I havent had AF yet.

I'd check your pump and try pumping again before your next scheduled pump to see what's up.  Do you feel full at all?

  • I don't really have any words of wisdom, but I do know how you feel. I have been questioning my supply for about a month now. I really, really want to BF through Lily's first year, and it makes me very sad to think that is in jeopardy.

I guess I would only suggest to you that you not take today's pumping session as the last word. I notice that my supply seems to fluctuate quite a bit, and fairly quickly. Drink lots of water, make sure you are eating good, maybe even drink some Mother's Milk tea, and see what happens. My supply is definitely not what it used to be, but we are still happily BFing.

  • Same thing happened to me right after my first pp period.  I took fenugreek for a few days and it worked.  I was surprised since I had little confidence in it working.  Worth a try.

  • 1st I have to agree with the other posters- super jealous!  I was excited to get 4 oz when I pumped!  I agree that you should check the pump and make sure it is in working order, drink some fluids and try again.  AF does mess with your supply so I wouldn't call yourself out yet.

  • honestly- that would freak me out too. I get around 14oz in the AM when i pump and i would seriously wig out if i didn't get anything all of a sudden. I would just drink a lot of water, try to relax a little bit. Next time you pump, relax, listen to some good christmas music, close your eyes, maybe apply some heat to your breasts and pump. GL!

  • I'm not pumping nearly as much volume as I used to.  During the day I used to be to pump 3 bottles worth, and am only getting 2.  I have a let down, but it's a mini one?  It feels like a fraction of the let down I get when I'm actually BFing.  I just started taking fenugreek, and it seems to be helping, but now I'm having to substitute 1 bottle with formula, and it makes me sad.

  • Thank you ladies... I really needed the pep-talk. I am going to go back on my Fenugreek tonight. Also, I am going to check out my pump and try again now. Thanks again!

  • I pumped the other morning and got almost 4 ounces very easily (could've kept going, but I wanted to have milk for DS later!).  Yesterday, I got 1/4 oz.  Today, about 1 1/2.  I have AF now, so I'm wondering if that's what the problem is.  I plan on taking Fenugreek to help.  That should help you.  Don't feel like you need to give up yet!  There are things you can do to boost your supply and it might only be temporary since you just had AF.
  • You know, that's happened to me once or twice before. If I try again in an hour it seems to work.

  • Yep at around 7 months my supply did drop and for a good 2 weeks I was pumping 1 bottle less a day (which is only 4.oz for me!). Try drinking more water and NOT stressing although trust me i stressed!

Anyway i am now at 11 months and i honestly didnt think I would make it this far. I also thought AF was coming but so far no AF either. I am hoping to wean when my DD turns 1 but I just wanted to let you know that you will recover from the dip :) I drank more water and went back on fenugreek for a few days. I also relied on my frozen stash to get me through that period and that helped me to stress about it a bit less :)

good luck you can do it!

  • 8 oz..holy crap! That is awesome. My supply tanked at 7 months or so, and tanks everytime I get AF....so keep up with the fenugreek and the tea, and you should be fine. But really 8oz is amazing, I miss those days!!
