3rd Trimester

gd & inducing question

I was told today that if my little bundle of joy doesn't come before week 39 they will induce me because of the gestional diabetes...has anyone had this happen or heard of this before?

Re: gd & inducing question

  • I'm being induced at 38 weeks for GD. It's fairly standard.

  • yes, I think this is pretty typical.  I was able to talk my doctor into waiting until 40 weeks, and then I ended up going into labor on my own at 39wks 4 days.  It is a legit medical reason, because they are worried about the health of the placenta when you have diabetes.  But I know how frustrating it can be if you don't want to be induced.
  • Yes. It is common.

  • Very common. The first time around I was allowed to go to 40 because mine was very easily controlled with diet. My OB normally induces between 38-39 weeks if you have GD. The second time was twins and I had a c/s at 37wks since GD wasn't the only complication.

  • Same here; my doc also told me if I don't go into labor by 39 weeks they will induce me due to gdb; wish us luck
  • I have GD and will also be induced at 39 weeks if she hasn't come on her own before then. As PP have said, it has to do with the risk of placental deterioration.

  • Yeah the doc I saw yesterday didn't give a lot of explanations other than its due to GD and my numbers & they don't want to risk a c section & baby growing like a line backer after 39 weeks....not exactly the best way to put it but it got the point across to me I guess.
  • I had a long conversation with my OB about this today. His policy is IF you are managing the GD by diet and exercise and the baby isn't measuring too big (my baby is actually measuring a little small) he does not induce and will let his patients go to 41 weeks (just like non-GD patients). However, if he has to put patients on meds (especially insulin) he will induce between 38-39 weeks.

  • Induction is set for the day after I hit 39 weeks with GD. I'm on glyburide but not insulin to manage it. Sounds pretty standard.

  • Another vote for "pretty standard". I have GD and have been careful with diet but still having difficulties, and have been on insulin am/pm for a couple of weeks. NSTs and all other numbers/tests have been great so far, but my doctor essentially said the same thing as PPs' doctors have said. They will continue to monitor things, but he said that they don't like to go past 39 weeks.
  • inducing looks like it is going to happen because I am on insulin and can not get my numbers under control with diet even though I am really trying .... scared to know when but also excited.
  • I was induced on my edd due to GD. But mine was diet controlled easily.
Interesting fact- I don't have GD this time! Even though I was overweight before this pregnancy and I'm 35 and last time I wasn't over weight and I was 29.
  • excitedmum.....weird how those pregnancy hormones work isn't it.... for the first time in two weeks my fasting number finally came close to 90 (93) and I have tried all sorts of different things to make that number right with food the night before.... oh well it took an up on my insulin to bring it even that close.
