Low laying placenta

I was told a couple months ago that one of the placentas is low laying. It's not completely covering the opening of the cervix but it's close enough to eventually be a cause for concern if it does not move up. I was wondering if anyone else has had a low laying placenta that turned into placenta previa or if it ended up causing more issues down the line? After recent events (I'll spare the details) I am a little paranoid that it's more of an issue than we originally thought. Anyone have any experience with low laying placentas? Thanks!

Re: Low laying placenta

  • I had a low lying placenta with my first pregnancy (singleton). It moved up and out of the way and I was able to deliver vaginally. My midwives did have me on pelvic rest until we got the all clear that it moved.

  • I'd make sure they keep an eye on it, but a lot depends on how far along you are. My MFM said that placentas grow and change until about 32 weeks, so if you're really early in the pregnancy, there may not be much to worry about yet. I would talk to your OB about what they expect for its development.
  • I started out with a complete previa then it moved to a low lying placenta. I had to have a scheduled c/s at 36w1d, I didn't have any problems and never had any bleeding but every ultrasound they would look at it. At delivery I was told both of my placentas were large (not sure what that means) so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with my previa.

  • I have a marginal previa for baby A. I've heard of previas becoming low lying as the uterus grows and stretches but not the other way around.

  • I haven't had a full ultrasound since they noticed it which was about six weeks ago. Every time I asked my doctor she said she couldn't do it so I've been waiting for a full ultrasound to find out if it's improved or not. I had heavy bleeding which is why I am now worried. Can a low laying become previa?
