Holding head straight.

Baby A when I prop her up can hold her head up straight. Baby B (my bigger girl) seems to always let her head fall to one side. I know we arent supposed to compare, but is this normal? Baby A is also a lot better at holding her head up during tummy time.

Here is a pic to see what I'm talking about.

Re: Holding head straight.

  • I'd say normal because at 1 month I wouldn't expect them to always be able to support their own head especially upright.  If she's getting a flat spot or seems to be preferring one side I'd try to switch it up so she looks/moves to the other side, but if it's just an issue of neck/head control I'd say at 1 month that's still very normal.

    Thank you!

  • Have her checked for torticollis by your pediatrician or chiropractor.  Could be totally normal at this age but if it is torticollis the earlier the intervention the better.

  • At one month I'd say just keep an eye on it. They're not going to do anything for torticollis at that point anyway. One of my boys has it and we've been doing therapy since 3 months. If you wanted you could do some general repositioning just to make sure she turns her head both ways.

  • I had the same thing with my girls. Lizzy always had her head flopped to the side. We're at 3 mo now and she has good head control and keeps it straight.
