Spitting up??

Anyone else's LO spitting up after every feed? DS did and once I was done nursing, we find out he has a milk protein allergy. Still does. I'm hoping she is just eating too much at once and it's not a MPA. I don't want to give up dairy for a year!!! But, I'll sacrifice for the benefit of my little puker! :p Did you discuss with your doctor and what advice? It's a P in the A to call my Dr, so I wanted to see if anyone here dealt with all of this before I go that route. TIA!

  • That happened alot at first due to overfeeding but it can very well be reflux as well.
  • Not after every meal but sometimes. I've been holding her up right for 5-10 mins after feeding and it has helped.

  • I appreciate the question and replies! LO started spitting up a bit, increasing after each feeding yesterday. I didn't really realize he could overfeed.

  • DS1 spit up a ton after every feeding. Since he was gaining weight and otherwise fine, i think he was just a happy spitter -- thats a real term. i don't think spit up alone is an indication of a problem as long as everything else is ok.

  • I thought reflux, too, and was also thinking about what I could have eaten that could be too acidic for her. I gave her gas meds last night bc she was crying with her knees to her chest. I don't know....I'll keep an eye on it. Thank you for your replies.

  • DD didn't spit up but had severe reflux and milk and soy protein intolerance (which she finally outgrew at close to 18 months).  The pediatric GI doc.  identified her intolerance based on the blood and mucous in her stools and told me the reflux wasn't necessarily related (it most definitely wasn't--even on elemental formula her reflux was awful).  DS2 is spitting up a lot but the pediatrician said not to worry unless he stops gaining weight or blood and mucous starts showing up in his diapers.

  • My older 2 spit up a LOT. I mean...a LOT. Especially DS1. After he would eat it would literally take 3 burp cloths to clean up his mess. Nothing was wrong with him though. DS2 spit up less, but definitely after every feeding. I thought it was normal until I held a friend's baby and they didn't offer a burp cloth. DS3 spits up much much less.

I would keep an eye on it. Some babies just spit more than others. I would say there is an issue if it seems like she's in real pain leading up to it or even after it's done.

  • DS1 had reflux and spit up a ton, but the spit up alone wasn't a concern. The fact that he would scream during and after eating, arch his back, and was in general, miserable, where why we ended up putting him on Prevacid until he grew out of it around 6-7 months (Zantac did nothing). The meds didn't stop him from spitting up though, just stopped the acid from causing him pain/screaming.
