Breast pump question

I made a few phone calls today regarding coverage for breast pumps, and was excited to discover that one provider has the medela pump in style starter kit covered. But it's i only the starter kit, does not include the bag, cooler, ect. All it includes is the pump, 2 bottles with breast shields and an AC adapter (I attached a picture) I can put this one any bag I see fit, and figure out how to keep my milk cold, Plus add an accessory kit to my baby registry for exta bottles and what not. Or pay $100 to add the bag bundle that includes everything like you would buy anywhere. Is it worth it to spend the extra? Thanks ladies! Edited for errors

Re: Breast pump question

  • I liked having the bag personally, but if you can put it in another bag of your choice I don't think it's a big deal.  Same with the cooler for milk...any insulated lunch bag with a cold pack could work.  I liked the medela cooler pack since everything fit exactly, but I don't think it's worth the extra money when you could get something cheaper.

If you want to spend extra money on supplies I'd get a hands free pumping bra and some extra bottles and shields.  Having more than one set was a lifesaver for me, but I was an EP and pumped All. The. Freaking. Time.

  • if you're going back to work, do you know what your pumping situation will be? My job provided a pumping room with a fridge..so I got to skip the cooler part. My ride is 40 min each way and I just popped the milk in the fridge once I got home.

I would definitely grab extra shields, valves, membranes..i found those to be handly but it was a learning curve for me to figure out what size shield i needed.

I don't think I needed the special bag it came in..it just helped organize it..but I'd just be sure to handle the motor carefully

  • Maybe I missed it, but what does the $100 "bag bundle" include?  Just a bag for the pump and a cooler bag?  If that's the case, it's not worth it.  Now, if it includes extra membranes, flanges, valves, etc... it might be worth looking into.  Trust me, when you're washing pump parts all the time, those are the things you'll want!

I found target has a medela pack with 4 pump bottles with covers, the cooler and specially sized ice pack for $25.00. I'll just register for that and put it all in my own bag. I hadn't considered needing all the other spare parts, I'm so new to all this. I think adding the bag bundle would just make it like the off the shelf kit you can get at BRU or target. So I'll need to add a spare part kit to my registry as well. Thanks so much ladies, you're awesome! :)

  • I ended up taking the pump out of the pump bag and putting it in my own with a little cooler lunch box thing.
Take the free pump and get what you need.
I used an old Vera Bradley tote.

  • The bag is all that is extra really.. not worth the $100! Save the money
