NTTGP related: natural deodorant?

edited January 2014 in Trying to Get Pregnant
So I have made a switch to natural deodorant over the past 6 months or so bc I have really sensitive underarms- think red and burning after some deodorants.
I have found thy natural deodorants stink (pun intended), I am on my 3rd and I am mortified by my scent after my trial w each new one. Those babies are expensive too- so any help would be appreciated!

Re: NTTGP related: natural deodorant?

  • I am curious to see what people have to say about this because I'm in the same boat. Nothing I've tried has worked out too well :-/
  • Natural deodorant is bullshit.  Find out what is it in the deodorants you've been using that make your skin shit and avoid that.  Much better than going around smelling like BO all day.

PS  I use Dove Original.  I'm pretty sensitive and have never had any issues with it.

  • Whatever you do, don't try lemons.  My sis had heard about this natural remedy and would just rub lemon halves on her pits.  She tried this out during the dead of summer.  BO and Lemon?  Disgusting.

I like the suggestion from @slappalicious  Not sure if this would work since the area may not be as sensitive as underarms, but I might have a quicker way of deducing what the irritant is rather than doing just one deodorant per day.  Try several at a time on the lower half of your leg (shin). Use a pen/marker to write a number (1, 2, so on) on the shin, then apply a streak of deodorant beside each number.  You'd have to separately keep a list of which deodorant was applied to which number.   If you've ever had allergy testing done then that's the system I'm referring to.  Then at the end of the day you can see which, if any, you reacted to.

  • My Mom had breast cancer so she has been using Crystal. She likes it and has super sensitive skin. I live in Louisiana so the lack of antiperspirant in it makes me smell. It is ok for winter use. I have quite a few friends that avoid aluminum (antiperspirant) so they use Old Spice mens deoderant. They have a few not so manly scents and it works great. I cant get over the scent at all...so I use Dove during warm season (10 months, lol).

No shit about Louisiana. I have to use clinical strength secret. It gets hot down here and I sweat a lot. I've tried the natural deodorants but they don't work for me.
    Fucking bump!!!!

I love the smell of that stuff.  It's in my top two.  That and Dove Original scent are the best.

@clecyclist Does that stuff work really well?  Like, for someone that NEEDS an antiperspirant?  Does it still keep the smell down?

  • Thank you all SO much! All of your suggestions have been super helpful. I live in VT so you know it's bad when you stink in the freezing a$$ cold! So embarrassing! Thanks again!

  • $14 for LaVanilla The Healthy Deodorant! It's amazing and smells so good! I do have to re-apply once during the summer, but it's really great stuff.

  • I use Arm & Hammer Essentials. I get the unscented kind (which smells like grapefruit because it contains citrus oil). I'm a big fan. It contains no aluminum and doesn't irritate my arms. I buy it from Amazon because it's hard to find in stores.

  • You can make your own. It's very easy and inexpensive.

It works really well. The only issue that I had was that it was very drying, but I didn't add any essential oils.

    Good luck!

  • I use Trader Joe's brand natural deoderant.  It works pretty well but sometimes I notice I get a little ripe in the summer when I sweat super bad.  But antiperspirant used to give me painful bumps--not like ingrown hair razor shaved bumps--like straight up lumps. My grandmother died of breast cancer and I just feel too uncomfortable with the idea of something blocking my lymph nodes.

  • I use the rock roll on and it works really well and not too expensive. The best part is that there is no white residue on your clothes.
