MH went out to eat with our CEO last night and discussed the chance of him getting a large raise (considering he passed the Bar and is now a certified attorney and hasn't gotten a raise since before he got his J.D.) and it is looking promising! The only down side is that my uncle is still a part owner of the company and is a complete A-hole that only has his own kids in mind (his son also works for the company). The CEO said he would need to discuss it with my uncle and I am sure that probably half the amount of $ MH requested as a raise will be knocked off by my uncle so that MH (who has his Juris Doctorate.) will not make more than his son, who has a Bachelors degree. Its so disheartening that it has to be this way.
The one other time, several years ago, that MH asked for a raise, he put on a suit, made a powerpoint and handouts and met with the entire board and argued his case. He wound up with a raise, and then my cousin was just handed an even bigger raise (didn't even ask for it!) because my uncle wanted him to be "on top". This is the major downside of family businesses. MH, who everyone who knows anything about our company knows is a hard worker, gets the shaft and my cousin, who is lazy and constantly forgetting to do important stuff, gets all the glory because he is the boss's son. SO FRUSTRATING!
I wish my dad (who just stays out of it all) was more willing to get involved in the company politics so that MH would have a chance at getting what he truly deserves.
But anywho, any kind of raise is a blessing so I am trying to be grateful! Hopefully this raise will give me a shorter time frame for quitting my job!!!
Re: Potential Raise for MH
Yep! That's the guy! He is a relatively nice guy and I love him as an uncle, but I absolutely despise him as a boss. He actually made stuff up about Jason and told it to someone we regularly do business with and that person, knowing Jason's character, turned around and told Jason what he said! Jason never confronted my uncle about it, but I think it speaks volumes that this person, whom my uncle has done business with for 20 years now, knew it was a lie and confided in Jason about what he had said. Obviously people know character when they see it.
And @paddyb, he actually has a local attorney really wanting him to come work for him, but the pay would be about the same starting off and the hours would be longer. He really loves his job with the company and he loves getting to work outside and do a lot more than just practice law, but he will consider changing jobs if this treatment continues, that's for sure! The CEO mentioned to my dad that he was afraid Jason would leave the company and go work for the law firm, so he is aware and I hope that will help his cause. My uncle, however, has said to my dad "if he will make more there, then he should go there!" but I know its just talk and we would be pretty screwed if Jason left as we would have to hire an engineer AND a lawyer and pay 2 salaries to make up for his job.
