engagement party - gifts?

Anyone know the gift etiquette for engagement parties? I've never been to one but DH and I were invited to one for our good friend. It's going to be a nice dinner at a restaurant, hosted by the bride-to-be's sister and there was no mention of a registry. Since there will be bridal showers and wedding gifts,  I'm assuming no gifts are expected for the engagement right? Wedding is in 6 months. WWYD?

Just thought of something too...DH will be taking professional photos at the party (as a favor for free) so if gifts are expected could that count as our gift?

    I don't think a gift is necessary, I think the pictures are enough... You could, if you want, bring a bottle of wine, or a small trinket, but a big gift is overkill.

    No gift required, but  your husband's photography services would definitely be a gift!

    I usually just buy a couple wedding magazines when I am invited to an engagement party, but even that is not necessary.
