At 3 months her hands are still ALWAYS like this PIP

I am hoping for LO to start swatting at toys and 'playing'. But her hands are always in clenched fists and at her chest! Anyone else? When did they stop? Ha I know its fine. Its just kind of funny.

  • LO just started opening them more and he is almost 4 months. But even with his fists clenched he would swat at things. Although he still wants his hands in his mouth and I'm hoping it's just a phase.
  • Like PP i've only noticed over the past few days that DD's hands are more relaxed.  She's also only recently started swatting at toys and successfully grabbing hold of them (mostly by accident i think).   When her hands are fisted, they're almost exclusively in her mouth.

    She's 3mos 2 wks

  • Mine is not reaching or batting yet, but he is slowly unclenching the fist. It's funny, but he'll relax his last 3 fingers and still clench the pointer and thumb, like he's making the 'ok' sign. It's like each finger is slowly unclenching.

  • For the last 3 or 4 weeks DS's hands have been relaxed for the most part.  He flips me off constantly.  He's grabbing the toys on his play mat now too.  He loves that mat more than he likes being held now.  If he's awake and not hungry, that's where he wants to be.

  • DD1 did that all the time up until she was a year old, she still ate and stuff of course but in all our pictures she's making fists. I wouldn't be concerned.

    This!!
  • Same here, he relaxes them sometimes when he's swatting at his toys but mainly keeps them balled up still.

Fists all the time. He holds them up in front of his face like he is a boxer. He also always has his thumb tucked in between his pointer and middle fingers.

Ditto this - especially the thumb thing lol! A2 punches at her toys. I'm not sure if she's trying to or if her arms are still spastastic.

  • Fist baby here. She's starting to open her fists on her playmat and when she's on the changing table just over the past few weeks but whenever she's sleepy or overstimulated they are tight and at her chest, pretty funny. She loves sticking her full fist in her mouth now too, crazy babies!

  • It can be a sign of neurological problem, but not until later on. That's what I gathered from a super quick Google search.

  • Our LO just started grabbing at things this week. He's 10 weeks. It's really helped having him play with those grid like toys that he can get his little fingers through and grab easy. He likes to hold his bottle now too. But his hands are still in fists a good part of the time. Especially his left hand more so than his right.
  • My babe sticks her arms straight out like a super man pose. It cracks me up. She's 12 weeks and has maybe been doing it for 2 weeks now.
