Re: "12 hours sleep by 12 weeks old" thoughts?

  • I received this book from my sister who used it on my now 2yo nephew and it worked for her.  I started implementing these steps around 7 weeks and had my LO sleeping 8hrs a night by 10 weeks.  Obviously I didn't follow it exactly - I only want him sleeping 8ish hours so I can spend time with him in the evenings after work :)  It's a four step process and it's not easy by any means but it worked for me and my sis,and I would recommend it...to those looking for sleep training advice/help.

  • I honestly haven't read other books b/c I knew this one worked for my sis!  It's a four step process - 1) every 4hr feeding schedule 2) eliminate night feeds 3) extend night sleep 4) naps (I think!)  It's not CIO but a lot about scheduling.  It was a pretty easy read and IMO worth it to sleep through the night!  Again, it wasn't always easy/pretty but totally worth it!  Since he's been sleeping 8hrs a night I'm a brand new mom!!!!  She says something in the book along the lines of 'sleep training is like dieting, if you cheat you won't see results'...and I believe it was true for us!

  • I just ordered this book as well. A friend of mine (mom to three, including a set of twins, and a PA) recommended it when I told her how LO was sleeping. Don't have any thoughts on it yet, but will probably modify to fit my LO.

  • For those interested, every step is a gradual process not 'cold turkey' for the baby.  step 1) if baby is currently eating every 2.5 hours, try and stretch to 2.75, then 3, then 3.25, etc.  step 2) you work on eliminating one feeding at a time, (say you have 3 night feedings, you eliminate the 2nd, 3rd then 1st I believe - I only had one to eliminate so that was helpful) and for each feeding you slowly eliminate, if the baby eats 3 oz at that feeding, after 3 nights, knock it down to 2.5 oz, if after two nights the baby self weans to 2 oz, that's the new amount.  And I go without eating for about 12 hours every day - from dinner to breakfast.  AND you can tweak it to your needs - I only have my son sleeping 8-9 hours a night...and I have to wake him up in the mornings.  Of course, this is only for those that are interested in sleep training - if you're not, do your own thing :)  I say to each their own!

Sorry, but I don't think sleep training should involve dropping feeds. At this young age it's important for them to be getting nutrition, especially at night because they are growing rapidly. If you try to manipulate their natural rhythm for nutrition their weight gain could suffer. I've read about baby's with low weight gain due to being put on a schedule early on.  I can see dropping or changing feeds in an older baby but not one that is only 3 months old. Baby's at this age should be allowed to ween off night feeds on their own.  You can do other things to help the baby learn day from night and sleep longer stretches that have nothing to do with dropping night feeds. There's dream feeding, cluster feeding before bed, making sure baby knows day from night early on so night feeds are quick (no diaper change, no stimulation, just feed and back to bed), making sure baby is getting enough during the day and creating a healthy sleep environment, routines. My baby started sleeping 12 hours overnight and I didn't have to drop any feeds- he did it on his own, a healthy way.  You're right, to each their own but I really don't think it's good to try to feed by the clock, especially in a baby this young and I believe this is the advice of most medical professionals as well.  Do they not tell us in hospital to feed the baby on demand?? Yes....  OP and anyone else reading this: I think you should consult with your paediatrician before adopting this method.

  • Should have mentioned - as you eliminate night feeds, you add those oz to other meals.

  • I honestly don't know the protocol for BF and these steps - she has specific sections on it but I did not read them as a FF.  She also has sections on sleep training with multiples.  Only had enough time to read what I needed with the sweet newborn baby boy attached to me :)

I'm just going to ask how often *you* go without eating for 12 hours?

Jackson STTN 8:00 PM to 7:15 AM when I wake him up for daycare. He has his last bottle of the night at 7:30.  So yeah, my almost 4 month old goes 12 hours without eating. DS1 was the same way by this age.

FWIW, I did no form of "sleep training" with either child.  Some babies just adapt to STTN sooner than others.

  • I haven't read it and won't because I'm not interested in sleep training my 4 month old. Babies waking at night is one of natures way of preventing SIDS. Personally I know my LO couldn't go that long without eating either.

    HELL. NO.

And just because a PP mentioned that a PA recommended the book, I'm going to negate that with saying that I'm a PA and I WOULD NEVER recommend this book.

This concept reminds of the Baby Whisperer method that is currently not endorsed by the AAP because it can lead to failure to thrive and malnourishment in babies.  There's no way to "force" babies to eat more than their capable of and, then, to deny them food when they're hungry....absurd.
