Let's discuss: morning sickness remedies

I cut soda out about 3 yrs ago. Well, I say cut it out, but it's more like I let myself have it only once a month or so.

But it's the only thing that's helping my MS. I am having sprite every night! Anyone else? I keep reminding myself that each can is 4million tbsp of sugar or whatever it is, but in my current state, it's all I can stomach.

What's working for you? I will take any and all suggestions :)

Re: Let's discuss: morning sickness remedies

  • Hey, if it works, drink it! A little sugar won't kill ya. And the ms will subside by the second tri so you can cut out the soda then. For now I have the whatever works mentality!

    Sour candies!!
  • Loading the player...
  • After a week of sour candies, I can't do those any more for some reason. Tart green apples are still helping though.

And I might look for that tea. Even though the thought of anything mint makes me heave, I'll try anything.

Ginger trips are gross but seem to help a little.

I hope today was a one-off, peak day or something. Felt awful alllllll day.

  • I was prescribed a prenatal vitamin last year that had ginger and b6 in it.  Every time I wanted to hurl, I popped one of those suckers and it straightened me out.  I think they were expensive, but they were well worth it.

If anyone is interested, they were (are) called B-Nexa.  Look em up!

    Me:39 & DH:40 ~ TTC #2

  • What has worked so far me is Earth Mama Angel Baby Morning Wellness Tea, smelling lemon essential oil, magnesium (transderamally) and taking a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice <--that gets rid of my heartburn in a second too! But the best one is actually forcing myself to eat a little something.
  • Last time I had very very mild MS, so take this with a grain of salt. I found that eating a little bit here and there helped. If my stomach started to get empty, I started to feel barfy. Jolly ranchers, lemon drops, and fruity tic tacks helped as well. Keep crackers by your bed, also. They help a ton.

  • Oh I forgot to mention, my DH put peppermint flavored Chapstick in my stocking and I have noticed that has helped...maybe the smell calms my stomach because gum sometimes works for me too.
  • My MS has been pretty mild, but I ordered an essential oil - ginger- and just rub a little on my belly. Makes it stop fairly quickly. Also, the last couple days, I've been drinking a glass of water when I first wake up, and I think that's helping too!

I have NO idea if it works but I read up on this tea, ordered it and got it today....JUUUSSSST in case!  Haven't gotten MS yet but i'm trying to get prepared. lol  It's called "Organic Morning Wellness Tea" by Earth Mama Angel Baby...100% organic herbal tea for queasy tummies. I'll let you know if it works if/when I need the stuff! It was like $5...caffeine free/gluten free. Looks like main ingredients are ginger, spearmint, chamomile, orange, lemon and peppermint. Figured I'd give it a shot even if I don't get queasy!

My mom always kept saltines on her nightstand...sadly, being gluten intolerant kind of ruins that idea for me! :)
Loved this tea! The night time one is really good too!

  • Although I didn't have it bad last time and it hasn't really kicked in yet this time, my tricks are trying to eat every couple of hours (it's ALWAYS worse when hungry and in fact the only time I was sick during my last pregnancy were on an empty stomach), if you are liking sprite maybe try some lemon perrier? Because that has the carbonation and a little bit of lemon flavoring in it? I am a fan of the grapefruit perrier and enjoy a glass every night in a wine glass, makes me feel sophisticated bwahaha! I'd also find a candy you like, even jolly ranchers work for some and keep them handy (purse, at your desk at work, etc).

  • I have it bad. I've tried lemon candy-- it helps a little. Ginger ale helps a bit. I'm sick of saltines and pretzels already. Going to look into those Sea Bands and preggo pops today. Anybody taken Zofran while pregnant?
  • I took Zofran last time, and I probably will have to this time.  The key is: take Colace too.  Keep drinking something if you can keep it down.  Keep taking getting fiber if you can figure out how.  Zofran is not without side effects, but it did bring me from total misery and constant vomiting to mild misery and some vomiting.
  • I have very mild m/s this time around. Ginger candy & caffeine has helped me.

  • The only thing that worked for me with DD is saltines. I would have one saltine every twenty minutes and that helped.

But, wouldn't you know, doesn't work for this one. Haven't discovered what does yet.

  • I don't have it bad... i just have to make sure I don't get hungry.. like ever. if I go too long between meals I feel soooo queasy. So my strategy is snacks, snacks, and more snacks. Also gingerale seems to help a lot too!

  • I tried all the common remedies and soda also helped me sometimes, hard candy helped kinda but my only real relief came from zofran. I already got it from my NP on my very first appointment this time because last time my m/s was so awful.
  • Like others, eating constantly (generally no more than 2-3 hours in between snacks). I am finding white toast with butter helps calm my stomach when nothing else seems like it will stay down. I am getting some peppermint tea for at work, since I haven't said anythign yet. Based on others, am hoping that helps!

  • Yep. Eat. When my stomach is empty, I feel like I want to hurl. Food helps curb it...until my stomach is empty again.

  • I am wishing for the second trimester too, though my MS sticks around until 18 weeks typically.

I agree with the ginger, eating, peppermints, sour candy & sea bands.  I read somewhere to go with what you are craving and I tend to be able to stomach those things.  I also take half of a Unison tablet and 50MG of B6 at night.  I also take 50MG of B6 at breakfast and one at lunch.  The combo of the 2 mimics an anti nausea med.  I think it takes the edge off.  I've had a solid week of morning sickness so far and the one night I forgot the Unisom/B6 I felt GROSS the next day.

Also worth googling is magnesium to prevent morning sickness.  I read a bit on it and got a magnesium spray that you put on your skin.  I can't tell if it helps or not... my boys typically have normal morning sickness and my girls are WICKED to carry and I'm really sick.  Either this is a boy or the magnesium is really helping. :P

  • I have been nauseous since week four and am only into week five. It seems to be progressively getting worse. Taking all your suggestions to heart. I teach high school and my worst fear is vomiting in front of my students. Ugh.
  • I'm a big Rice Chex fan...I eat some before I even get out of bed. I have celiac disease so I can't have saltines, but to me Rice Chex are the next best thing

  • Does anyone notice their MS really bad at a certain time of day? Mine is awful at 5:00 at night. So much for MORNING sickness. And I feel so bad because my DH comes home from work at 530 and I am a mess, vomiting...and forget dinner being done. I've started cooking dinner at 3:00 and then reheating because I know it's coming!

Funny you should say that, the morning sickness was my first clue that pregnancy #2 was another girl. If there is any truth to this, I have girl #3 on board here!

I was told I was having a girl last time because I was so so so sick. Lost nearly 20lbs before it let up halfway into second tri. Then I was told I was having a boy because of how I was carrying. Boy won.

I'm already being told I'm having a girl based on baby's hb of 157 yesterday. We'll find out in September!
  • I taught at a Special Needs camp from weeks 5-13 with my first... I was worried about the same thing.  I kept food (crackers, etc) at my desk and always had peppermints in my pocket.  Those seemed to keep me doing while I had a class.  I'm sorry it's already bad at 5 weeks. :(

  • Today is our wedding anniversary and today is the first day I threw up. :-( I've been eating every few hours and today sucking on peppermints, but I still felt horrendously sick all afternoon. I'm a preschool teacher and don't know how I'm gonna make it at work without getting sick in front of people. Stressed.

  • Today was the first day mine was really bad!  Starting about an hour before lunch until a few hours after, oh man I had to fight hard to keep my food down.  It's starting up again now, around 10pm.  Urg.

I had acupuncture this afternoon and the guy gave me these little pressure point things for my ears.  They're like tiny bandaids with little blunt pokey things that I'm supposed to squeeze when I feel queasy.  Not sure if they work or not, but my metro/bus ride home wasn't bad and that's usually when my m/s is the worst.

Last time I did B6 supplements and I think they helped a lot.  I had sea bands but they didn't do much for me.  This time I got the PsiBands - they're the same concept but you can tighten them more to get more pressure on the acupressure points, so I'm hoping they work better.

Otherwise, protein worked well for me last time (greek yogurt, hard boiled eggs, etc as snacks), and making sure my stomach didn't get empty.  Ice water seems to help, too, and sour candy.
