Night terror?

Anyone have experience with their LOs having night terrors? Based on what I've read, I think that's what's going on with my almost 10 month old DD. It's happened a handful of times the past couple of months. She'll wake suddenly, screaming, a couple hours after bedtime. It's completely different than her normal cry, totally hysterical. She seems really disoriented, like she can't see us even though her eyes are open. It lasts for 15 minutes or so and then she goes back to sleep like nothing happened. Then again, she does have an ear infection so maybe she just woke from pain and was disoriented? How can you tell the difference? If it is a night terror, how do you handle it? Some things I've read say it will actually pass quicker if you don't touch them or talk to them.

Re: Night terror?

  • I have always thought DD was having a night terror if she wakes in the MOTN screaming/crying hysterically and I know she's not sick or having pain anywhere.  Those times it usually takes her a while to realize that she's ok.  I will pick DD up anytime she's hysterically crying.  She has a fake whiny cry that I know she uses just to get someone to play with her and that's the one I don't pick up for.  I figure if DD is having a nightmare/night terror she's too young to know how to get herself out of it so I help her by rubbing her back and whispering it's ok or holding her close to me.

  • If it's truly a night terror, then she is not actually awake. DS1 had them from time to time and there is really nothing you can do, unfortunately. It's actually worse to pick them up (and a lot of times they will not really let you do it, anyway) so you can just stand by and make sure they are safe, etc. (not thrashing around too much, etc.). It's tough, but it will pass. A lot of times they happen due to lack of sleep.
