Does itchy belly always mean stretch marks are coming?!

I'm 22 wks this week and I finally felt some movement in my belly! And...a really itchy belly I am trying to keep moisturized morning and night. Does this without a doubt mean stretch marks are coming?? Worried!

Re: Does itchy belly always mean stretch marks are coming?!

  • My belly itches all the time and no stretch marks.

  • Music to my ears...hope this will be true for me!
  • I don't think so! Just keep moisturizing and drinking water. Oh and don't itch!
  • Not always. Try coconut oil!

  • Its probably just dry skin. I never had an itchy belly with my first two and got stretch marks with both.

  • I have an ichy belly all the time, it's probably a mix of dry skin and stretching skin... Moisturizer takes care of it. I'm 33 weeks and still no stretch marks! Keeping my fingers crossed :-)

  • Oil of any kind helps a ton with itchiness! I use coconut oil and baby oil and so far have had no itchiness or stretch marks
  • I found the best product, ordered it a few days ago from amazon.. It's by Wise ways herbals, Beautiful Belly Balm and it stays moisturized for at least 12 hours.  Smells a little odd but I got past it.. Love it!
  • good thread! I'm having itchy belly but mostly itchy boobs! I don't want to get stretch marks already! I started moisturizing with tummy butter and gloss two days ago

  • I don't think so - I'm itchy all over and have made it through two pregnancies without them.  I think it's more genetics - some are just prone to them and others aren't!
  • With my previous 3 pregnancies, itching was a sign of dry skin.  I never got stretch marks.  However, if you have severe itching followed by a rash you need to consult with your doctor- there's a condition called PUPPS (I believe this is the correct name).  I'm not sure I believe stretch marks are hereditary either.  My aunt, cousin, mother and sister all got them horribly bad however I never did.  I can say my mother and my sister both gained a ton of weight in their pregnancies and I just gained the normal amount and never had big weight jumps so I personally think that has a lot to do with it.
  • My belly was itchy all through my pregnancy and I ended up with stretch marks on my love handles and boobs - my belly is stretch mark free. I used Palmer's Coco butter on my belly every day.

  • I've been itchy non-stop, using the tummy butter, but I think it has to do with the maternity clothing that covers your belly, oh what's the term, the pants that have the part that stretches up above your tummy.  Anyway, I think that material being there all day is what is causing the itching more.  Just another idea here
  • no.  i did get stretch marks and it wasn't quite an itch, but an uncomfortable burn like from being slapped or something type "itch"… i also get verrrrry itchy legs after pregnancy…and i realize now, that that same itchy leg feeling is what i have felt on my stomach during the first half of pregnancy & my stretch marks are not even being stretched and thats not even where i was itching.
most people i know do not actually have stretch marks,,,so the fact that i have acknowledged you here, just decreased your chance of getting them significantly!!

  • Mine itches more when I haven't had enough water.  It has been itching for a few weeks now, and still no stretch marks.  Fingers crossed that it holds true for the rest of my pregnancy!

  • No. My first pregnancy I never got them and I'm over half way through this one and still nothing. I'm Itchy all the time. I may be wrong but I feel oily skin, combined with good genes may prevent stretch marks from appearing. (Knock on wood. Lol)
  • Do you use regular coconut oil like you buy in a jar from the super market or is there some kind of coconut oil lotion? I cool with coconut oil just wondering if its the same thing?
  • No. Mine was itchy with DS and I had one tiny stretch mark which isn't really even noticeable now.

  • Could be just dry skin. This is my second pregnancy and I've noticed my belly is itching a lot too. Did not have any itching with my first pregnancy, but of course every pregnancy is different. But so far so good and no stretch marks! Hoping it stays that way (fingers crossed).
  • No. My belly was seriously itchy with both my previous pregnancies and I never got stretch marks on my belly. I did get stretch marks on my upper-high/hips which were never itchy. If you are itchy, try using lotion to soothe it.
