washed the baby clothes - they shrunk!

I've got twins that are still growing at singleton rate.

They thought they woulld be small 5lbs max. it looks as though they will be more like 6 or 7.

So when we did the big buy a few months back i spokane i bought a crap load of clothes. Mostly new born sizes, and some 0-3 months.

So last night I went out and bought the baby detergent. Followed the instructions, washed in cold water, tumble dry low.

EVERYTHING SHRUNK! To the point that they are freaking doll clothes. The babies feet are long and all the little sleepers and paints have feet. They will not fit.

I am so freaking upset. They were all Carters outfits and sleep sacks etc.

Feck!

Thats odd. None of mine have ever shrunk. Maybe try re-washing in cold water and then laying flat to dry?

I've never had a problem with shrinking either! How big are they? Even at over 8.5 lbs my daughter still needed newborn clothes.

I've always washed Carters in warm (sometimes even hot) water and dried on medium, and they've always shrunk a small amount after the first wash but they always still fit. I bet they're not as small as you think they are and that they'll still fit. Hope that's the case, anyway!

I had some clothes (Carter's) shrink in my first load too. I cried. But I am hoping they will stretch a little and still fit for the first week.

Did you buy them at a Carter store? If so and if you have the receipt, take them back. Explain what happened. They have an amazing return policy and may let you exchange them.

I washed all mine in cold and tumble dried on low. Didn't have any issues. That's so strange! I hope you're just freaking out a little and they actually are bigger than they seem. If not, definitely do what @holly820 said. Carter's has great return service.

Baby clothes will shrink. All Carters stuff does that Ive noticed but not too that point. That really sucks!

Still can't go back to the room to continue the folding.

Furious and can't believe it. So disappointed. I mean I have so many of the wee things because of the twins. Between the carseats, the stroller, the cribs etc plus the endless effing renovations that sucked an extra 3 months of rent out of our pockets we don't have the buffer right now to repurchase the clothes. And I was so happy with Carter's they are so nice and cute but to have them shrink this much is a real piss off.

I emailed Mom (she knows best

and will be here to help me when the babies come) she said not to worry, that she will fix it and if not when they do come she will see what will fit and what won't and then DH and she will go buy replacements.

Still what a waste.

No idea what NB size is supposed to be other than what hangs in the store before washing. I'm a FTM and all my nieces or nephews were 8-10 lbs so were in 0-3 months from the get go.

But they are super tiny now and shrunk about 40%. I'd take a picture of before and after except I laundered everything so everything shrunk. Dammit.

Still like you say and MOM says... I'll wait to see what size the babies actually are and hope they will stretch out to fit. Otherwise, nothing to do but replace.

LOL no dolls (yet) but I do have wine glasses (currently packed away due to the damn renos).

Was just thinking the red wine glasses are enormous. I think they only serve to exaggerate the problem. Haha

Also.... there's really no way to actually know how big your babies will actually be.

They are over 3lbs now (based on the measurements from the u/s I get every 2nd week). And still growing at the rate of singletons.

They were thinking I would deliver really early, but it looks like all the issues have resolved themselves and I will likely make it the full term (37 weeks for twins). If so these kids will not be tiny little 4-5 pounders like everyone originally thought.

However you are right..... never know what will happen between now and their birthday.

It's just that right now the clothes are the premie size (from what I saw at the stores).

My DS was 8lbs 14oz and wore newborn sizes for at least a month. I remember looking at some of his clothes and thinking how small they were, but newborns are small. I'm sure brands take into consideration shrinkage, as well.

That's really odd. Almost all of DD's clothes through 12mo were Carter's and I never had any issues with major shrinkage (and I always wash warm, dry medium).
