Birth Center VS Hospital

We have recently decided to use a birthing center rather then hospital. This my first bun, but #5 for hubby. The plan has always been all natural and I am going to be seeing the same RN, Doula, and mid-wives that will be there for delivery as each monthly appt. So I honestly don't see many cons.

Re: Birth Center VS Hospital

  • I'm confused as to the point of this post.....

    Lurking is hard.
  • Or is that not the point of these forums?
  • Can we just pretend she asked "what's the difference and which is everyone choosing and why?" I'd totally jump in on that discussion.

Done. I am having my baby at a hospital with a midwife, however from what I hear I basically get whichever midwife is on call and not necessarily the one that I see at all my appointments. I chose this because it will cost me a total of $250 out of pocket instead of $6,000 that it cost us last time. It's like when something is on sale, I think I need it more. This baby delivery is on sale.

  • I'm going to a birthing center inside a hospital. So I guess both.
  • LOL @KrystaJ
I'll pretend this is @eltrain5's thread instead. I'll be at a hospital. I don't know of any birthing centers around me otherwise I would consider. We are pretty hospital happy around here with The Cleveland Clinic. They pretty much own northeast Ohio.

I honestly don't know much about birthing centers. I am going for the hospital that has a really great high-risk pregnancy "program," for lack of a better word. They are the HRP whisperers.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I'm interested in this discussion, as well. I was planning a hospital birth, but have recently swapped over to the local birthing center for my natural birth, and I'm way excited to give birth there. Shiny wood floors, comfy couch, pretty bed (though I imagine they remove that pretty bedspread, haha) huge bathtub, iPhone plugin for music, a dedicated midwife who knows what I'm looking for as far as a birth experience and plans to make that happen. Hell yeah. Versus cold hospital lighting and a harried OB who probably isn't the one I got to know in the first place?

That is, if I stay low risk through this pregnancy. If anything goes even a little funny or wrong, I'll feel safer in a real hospital environment.

I'd love to hear from women who've done both, and which they preferred. Besides a pretty room and a midwife I know and like, I don't really know what to expect vs the hospital, as I'm a FTM.

  • Hospital for me. I like the idea of a birthing center, in theory, but when I toured, it didn't feel right. It was a big, beautiful old house that had been restored, but it just felt cold, echoey, like grandmas house where you shouldn't touch anything. I was disappointed to feel that way, but I know that I feel more comfortable in the hospital birthing suite than I did during that tour, so I've decided on that.

  • I really wanted to use a birth center, but unfortunately we had some issues at the begining of pregnancy that has made us nervous to not have direct access to a hospital. Plus we LOVE our OB, so unmedicated birth at a Hospital it is. If there is a next time, I will try to deliver at home or a birth center.

  • We will be in a hospital with my family doctor.  I like the idea of a birth center in terms of comfort but I want the option of a n epidural.  The birth center here is right next to the hospital which I would want in case something went wrong.

  • We're going with a hospital, although I wish I would have looked into this before I decided on an OB. There's a birthing center 1.5 miles from my house (although, the hospital is only 5 so NBD). Anyway, the hospital were using has the best NICU in the area, so that's a plus, just in case.

  • I've done both - first baby was with midwives in the hospital; second at a free standing birth center.  My hospital birth was fine but I much preferred being at the birth center.  Unfortunately, we've moved and the closest BC is over an hour away...so back to the hospital this time.
  • My hospital calls their maternity ward a birthing centre. So... best of both worlds? I haven't toured it yet, but I'm fairly certain it's really just a hospital maternity ward with a 'softer' name.

Toronto doesn't have any stand along birthing centres yet. We're working on it, but apparently Ontario is behind the times.

  • I'll be having another hospital birth. I momentarily considered a birth center but I love my OB so that's more important. Plus my hospital is very natural birth friendly and has one of the lowest c-section rates in the state.

  • I will be having a hospital birth. We are moving about 6 weeks before baby is born, most likely across country, and I don't think i would find a birth center that would take me.

I plan to give birth at a hospital, the same hospital where I gave birth to DD and had a fabulous experience.

The plan has always included drugs and I'm going to be seeing the same midwife at my delivery as at each monthly appointment.  I also get to see a staff of wonderful RNs and doctors that, like I said, were amazing with my first birth experience.  Plus there's a Jimmy John's across that street that delivers to my room.  So I honestly don't see many cons.

  • We're delivering at a freestanding birth center. After my first birth experience (at a hospital) I decided that as long as I stay low risk, a hospital is not where I want to be. I love my midwives and the birth center. Plus, going home within 4-12 hours after birth sounds pretty awesome!

  • We're going the hospital route, just because that's what we did before. I wanted to be all natural the first time, but didn't happen and I'm not sorry, lol!

    Epidural all the way.

Plus, I love my doctors so it was a no-brainer for me.
