No brace today

My little guy has a mild case of hip dysplasia and we had an ultrasound today to determine if he needed a Pavlik harness. He's making good progress towards normal hip movement so they're going to wait four more weeks to see if his hips are where they should be. I'm so glad bc we fly half way across the country to see grandparents tomorrow, and I was terrified of doing that with him in a new brace. Today's little celebration, and we hope we can avoid it all together next time too! Any other moms with hip kids in Nov. 13?

Re: No brace today

  • Congrats on the good news, mama! That's a good way to start a vacay.

My DD doesn't have hip issues but she does have reflux and a mild case of laryngomalacia, or a floppy airway. We've had ups and downs and expensive hospital visits and multiple doc appts- adding to the normal amount of stress of a newborn- so I can commiserate with you on that! Definitely celebrate these victories and every piece of good news!!

We don't have hip problems but we have kidney issues. I agree with @inlove0509 enjoy the little victories. I'm so tired of my baby being poked and prodded for all these tests.

  • Thanks, ladies. I hope both your little ones are doing better. Maybe we need a weekly health issues check-in?

  • That's a really good idea!! I tried looking into the special needs board but I don't feel as connected to them as I do the nov13 board mamas.
  • Hi there... I don't post very often but wanted to pipe up on this post. My son was breech and we've been watching him for hip dysplasia since he spent so much time in pretzel pose in the womb. At his 6 week hip ultrasound the doctor saw some minor irregularities but wanted to wait and see before prescribing any kind of treatment. The current plan is to have another ultrasound at 3 months. The hope is that once he's has more time to grow and develop the potential dysplasia will resolve.

Here's hoping both of our little ones have normal movement at their next appointment. I'm glad you had good news today and your LO is making progress.
  • At this point in the game, we have to take the small victories and CELEBRATE them :) I am so happy to hear that your vacation is starting off on the right foot!

My LO was breech so we have our hip U/S next Tuesday.

  • Hi Ladies.  My son doesn't have hip dyspepsia but was born with club feet. He's been casted from upper thigh to toes since he was 8 days old and had a minor surgery at 8 weeks old (now 10 weeks).  I completely understand the expensive hospital visits and added stress...my guy has also been fussy due to being uncomfortable in the casts. But we're all good mamas that do the best for the health of our kids :)

  • My dd has minor hip dylplasia too. She was a breech baby. She's had 2 ultra sounds and each time her hips look better, so no need for a brace! We do have to take her back in at 6 months and again when she starts walking, but I can totally deal with that.
  • Poor guy! Glad to hear he may be able to avoid the brace altogether. FX that's the case.

Last week it was confirmed that DS has torticollis. At this point it feels like we're spending every waking second doing his stretches and exercises. He has plagiocephaly due to the torticollis and if there isn't much improvement in the next several weeks he'll require a cranial helmet.

As much as I wasn't pleased with the news it could always be much, much worse. There were kids at the therapist's office with feeding tubes, severe mental impairments, wheelchairs, etc. I can't imagine how rough it is for their parents.
  • Awesome news!

  • I'm more of a lurker but wanted to chime in. My little guy was breech and has been in a pavlick harness since he was a day old, he's now 9 weeks. He had an ultrasound 2 weeks ago and is almost completely healed! He has 2 more weeks in it. It's not the most convenient thing but hasn't been bad at all, so if any of you breech mamas end up with your LOs in a harness it's okay!

He has all sorts of issues due to being breech like his soft spot is too small, he has torticollis, and needs to see a chiropractor to get adjusted. Good luck!
