Target meltdown

I have been a lurker on and off during my pregnancy and after I had LO (she's 10 weeks old now).

With that said I needed to share this. My LO has reflux and gas, needless to say she is a very, very fussy baby. I decided to brave Target today for a few items. She started crying towards the end of our trip and by the time we were in line she was really mad. There was only one more person ahead of me when a crazy elderly lady (who was probably 75) walked up to me and told me to take my baby out of her car seat because I don't know how bad it is in there and how horrible it was that I was doing nothing for my baby. I was mortified. She has no idea how fussy my LO can be and it would have made it worse to take her out only to have to put her directly back into the car seat. So I started crying in Target. There were about 4 moms who came up to tell me to ignore her and that she was totally out of line but I was still embarrassed and almost left my cart and all my items.

I'm usually not emotional and have not had post-partum issues, but for some reason this old bat really got to me.

I cannot believe I lost it in Target.

Re: Target meltdown

  • At least other moms came to your defense! I probably would of lost it too..

  • What an idiot. Take her out, so she could go postal when you had to put her back in 2 minutes later? I feel bad for the person who dares ever says something like this to me public. Sorry you had a bad day. Don't let it stop you from venturing out again. Sometimes it helps get a baby used to things.

  • That's terrible! I'm shocked she said that. Most old people I encounter tell me I hold my baby too much and need to let him cry. Ugh. I wish people would just mind their own damn business! So sorry you had to go through that.
  • @cfox815 I'm always amazed when I go back east how people avoid eye contact. I tried smiling at people in downtown Chicago once....never again.

I would TOTALLY make it my business if I heard someone say that to a mom.

You need to come to the SOUTHeast and we will smile back at you. =)
  • If it makes you feel any better kids scream ALL the time in Target. I used to work in the pharmacy there, it's got to be the store. She shouldn't of said anything. My little guy lost it in an antique store the other day, had anyone said anything they would of gotten some unfriendly words.

  • Sorry you had to go through this.  You were doing the best you can, and someone had to come in and put in their unwanted/ unhelpful two cents. Thank goodness other moms came to your defense!

    P.S.
I cried at target once, when I was six months pregnant and trying to register.  Maybe it is the store?

  • Our first public meltdown happened at Target too...thankfully DH was with us and was able to take LO out to the car while i was in the line...you should have seen us walking down Target...me pushing the stroller and DH with his hand in the stroller holding LO's paci inside her mouth while she screamed bloody murder...lol

  • Thanks everyone! I'm not sure why I let this crazy lady get to me but she did. I mumbled something to her about not wanting to take LO out because she had to go back in but then I turned around and started quietly crying. On a normal basis I would have just bitched her out and comment on her awesome eye brows that were drawn on.

I thought Target would be safe in case she had a public meltdown today...apparently I was wrong!
  • Don't you know that's what your middle finger is for?  Don't be afraid to use it!

I would automatically assume you are a serial killer.
When I moved to FL from MA I crazy side-eyed people all the time. Complete strangers will legit wave to you driving down the road or say how d'ya do in the grocery store.
    Serial killers. All of them.
oh CRAP…. i don't wave at people but when I walk past people on the street and eye contact is made, I say hi. Maybe I should stop doing that :)

  • My baby's first meltdown was at the children's place at the mall. I gave people the evil eye daring them to say something while I stood in line to pay. The next thing you know, they let me skip to the front. They saw I wasn't going to leave without getting what I came for. Jersey's in the house. Lol

OP, I'm pretty sure if that ever happened again, you will be more prepared to tell them to go fuck themselves. Courtesy of the lady with the fucked up brows.

  • I'm sorry that happened to you. Don't let it prevent you from going out again! Most people are supportive, just like the other moms you encountered.

  • I cried in the Target parking lot on my first trip out with DS1. He was fine but I couldn't figure out how to close my stroller since I had never done it before. It advertised one hand fold and I couldn't have folded it with 10 hands. Thankfully, another mommy came along and helped!
