STM- Lanolin or other nip cream for BF?

I used lanolin (lansinoh brand) while BF my first 2. It was fine- sticky, but fine. Nips still hurt but that's part of the gig. Just wondering if there is anything else I should try this time? I keep seeing this Motherlove stuff- is it any good?

  • I liked the Medela brand nipple cream better than Lansinoh.  It was less sticky and gross feeling.

I'm interested to see responses. I was a Lanisoh girl with DS. I also loved Soothies! I know some moms swear by coconut oil but I'd be afraid of possible allergies.

  • Lansinoh is what I use, and I goop it on! I got really cracked in hospital because of my inability to sit up right the first 2 days was hard to get a good latch... So the first 30sec at every start of a feed are hell right now.... Just be careful it doesn't get to warm... It fell in the crack of the recliner I have been sleeping on and oozed EVERYWHERE last night. I like that u don't have to wipe off before feeding.
  • I second the medela brand lanolin! I used the lansinoh brand with my first and hated it, I used medela with my second and it was sooo much better.
  • I have some lanisoh brand but haven't tried it yet. The LCs at te hospital gave me some medela brand and it's awesome

  • I used Lanisoh with DS and it was ok. This time I'm going to try rubbing a little breast milk into the nipple after feeding. My sister's LC recommended it to her and she says its working really well. If that doesn't work for me, I'm gonna try coconut oil.

  • I liked that one and Motherlove Nipple Cream. The later was really good for pumping discomfort.

  • Not to hijack this thread, but on a similar topic, I just got some gel breast pads in the mail. They can be frozen or warmed up, depends on your needs. Has anyone tried these?

  • I'm a Lansinoh girl. I use it on my other kids too....chapped cheeks and lips? An overnight cure. Love the stuff.
  • I forgot about Medela! I had a teensy tube from the hospital last time and I did like it better than the Lansinoh. And yes, rubbing the breastmilk in after feeding helps but I find thats really not enough in those first few days/weeks- you need to apply something thicker BEFORE nursing to protect. I think this Coconut Oil thing is a crock... and I hate the smell of it so that is out. Oh and @ziggy903 and @MissDemeanor- I have the soothies gel pads and I put them in the fridge sometimes but I've never warmed them. They are frickin awesome so if you don't have them... get them ASAP. To be honest, I never wanted anything hot on my chest- Lord knows I was sweaty enough! So I doubt I would ever heat them up... unless I had a clogged duct or mastitis or something, maybe?

Those are great! They really help with letdown in the beginning. I have lansinoh, but I didn't really need it with DD2. I had to use a nipple shield with her in the beginning because she had a tongue-tie. After we got it corrected her latch was a million times better. If anyone's nips get really cracked and sore you can ask your doc for an Rx for APNO (all purpose nipple ointment). They compound it for you at a compounding pharmacy.

I ordered the Avent breastcare essentials pack to try their breast pads out and also for the gel packs.  They're reusable and either freeze/refrigerate or can be warmed up sitting in hot water.  I've tried them on warm already for general boob discomfort.  I wish they got warmer, but they are nice.  Here's a link where I bought them:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00643FQVA/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I got the Avent ones as well, from BRU. It was an impulse buy, as they were on sale, and I was having a ton of stuff anyway. Glad to hear they're worth a try.

  • I just attended a BF class today and the instructor recommended Amends disposable pads and lanolin, Mother love products, Earth moma - angel baby or Plain coconut or olive oil.

She said she does not recommend lansolin when she consults. She also think soothies are good but said if you don't want to spend money, just cold cabbage leaves left in your bra after breast feeding do the trick.

Careful with the cabbage leaves. Using them too often can decrease your milk supply.
  • I found that no creams/etc and just keeping the girls "out" as much as possible seemed best the first few weeks. I was fortunate to not have any major issues with pain/cracking/such, so I never really found a big need for any nipple creams.

Let them air dry, the residue of BM that's on them after feeding will help too and, for me, less stuff (bras/shirts) rubbing really seemed to be better.  Oh and I've also heard not to use soap directly ON your nipples initially when washing, since it can be so drying and the skin is extra sensitive.

My BF classes said the same thing about the Earth Momma Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter. I took one class through a lactation consultant at my office, and the other through my hospital. Both recommended this brand. It doesn't need to be rinsed off to feed unless your baby shows that they don't like it. For soreness they said your posutre and latching will make the biggest difference, more than creams or anything else.

I was also told not to use soap, just a warm soft washcloth.
