comfort item?

Anyone have any luck introducing some sort of comfort item (stuffed animal, blanket, paci, etc.) when their LOs are older?

J has never cared for a pacifier and whenever I give her a little blanket or stuffed animal, she just tries to eat it or rip it apart. I was hoping if she had something like this in bed with her as a comfort thing, she'd fall asleep a little better. Any ideas?

Re: comfort item?

  • My LO was the same way; no paci or lovie. Her soother aquarium became her comfort item though. She won't nap at daycare without it in her pack and play. We are probably going to get a second one to keep there.

  • @bel194 Oh, I hadn't thought of something like that.  I am able to get her to sleep pretty easily at home because I feed and rock her to sleep, but if she wakes up early morning (like 5-6 am), she has trouble putting herself to sleep.  My DCP has trouble getting her to take nap, too, so it'd be more for them than anything!

  • I introduced one of those small A&A security blankets a few weeks ago, my baby won't take a paci either, I put it between us while she nursed for a few days and now she likes to cuddle it and sometimes suck the corner.

  • Mine always took a paci for naps and sleep but he also has a lovey by A &A

he goes to sleep with a paci but if he wakes up in the middle of the night or in the morning, he immediately reaches for his ("ghost dog" - which is what we call it).
We had the einstein ocean soother on the side of the crib but it didnt soothe him and instead got him too excited.  If he wakes up in the middle of the night, he would start smacking at the star button trying to get it started and then get frustrated when it won't start.  Eventually, we had to take it off the crib because it did the opposite of soothing.

  • My DD loves her Fisher Price doll. She has tried to give it her paci several times, so sometimes it is more of a distraction when trying to get her to nap. She also has a homemade tag blankie that she loves, because she is now obsessed with sucking on tags. I have stuffed both in my bra, so I think the smell comforts her.

  • @ChelsRy1 That's a good idea - maybe while she's falling asleep for a few days I can give it to her while she's eating and cuddling and then see how it goes.  Maybe once it smells like me, she'll do better with it.

    Thanks, everyone!

  • I have those a&a security blankets with the little animals heads on the top. I give it to him but he isn't interested yet. If I recall correctly, ds1 didn't really become attached to his until he was closer to 1.

  • Grayson has a giraffe lovie that he sleeps with and only gets a binky when it's time to sleep. I don't know how long these items will comfort him but they are working great right now. He also likes when I pull a blanket up by his head when I'm getting to sleep. It never stays there though!!

  • @kari5186 From the picture, it looks like it has the silky edge on the blanket which a lot of babies like (I've heard).  As far as thickness goes, hopefully @ChelsRy1 will weigh in :)  Also, Chels, how big are the security blankets?
  • My LO uses a bambino land swaddle blanket at nap and bedtime. Basically the same thing as an A&A blanket. She won't sleep with out it

  • @kelly422 and @kari5186 they are even thinner and about 16 inches squared. Here's a pic of her hugging it while napping on me when we were first introducing it, it's the silly edges she really likes.image

  • Actually they are the same thickness they just seem thinner since they are so much smaller I guess.

  • @kari5186 it's not even thinner, I'm crazy, I almost always have the blankets folded in half, it's exactly the same.

  • You ladies are awesome. I'm so trying the security blanket. N has to hold onto my fingers while she falls asleep so hopefully this helps!
  • I went and bought the lulujo security blanket. It seems to be pretty much the same as the a+a ones. I couldn't find the a+a where I live and didn't want to wait for an order.

Anywho, she seems to love it so far :) she loves the silky edges. @subliminalrabbit, Natali has to hold my fingers to sleep as well so your experience is really comforting. I hope she takes to the security blanket like E has!
