Babies: 6 - 9 Months

7m old wake time before 1st nap

I know every baby is different but I'm wondering about how long your 7m old is awake for the day before his or her first nap? For the longest time it was 2 hours like clock work for us....but now he's really really fighting that morning nap, which used to be a sure thing, no fuss!  He's yawning by 1.5 hours of wake time now but I'm not sure if it's out of boredom or fatigue to be honest. (it's cold here and we're in the house a lot unfortunately) You'd think wake time would be getting longer, not shorter!  I've tried bumping up the wind down routine and lengthening the wake time but the results are the same and it's not a good time. Hoping this is just a phase!  Still wondering how long other 7m olds are up for and are they taking 2 naps or still 3?  We've got a really mess of day sleep lately!

Re: 7m old wake time before 1st nap

  • For my LO, it's about 2-3hrs before his first nap. He's been fighting naps real hard lately too. He's been taking 2 naps a day for the most part. Occasionally he's only taken 1.

  • around 6.5 months we started to transition to 2 naps, so I had to gradually stretch her awake time in order to get us through the day.  Now it works out that she generally goes down for her first nap between 2.5-3 hours after waking up.  (more commonly it's closer to 3, but she is 8.5 months now)
  • For us it depends on how he slept through the night. Usually if he sleeps great he'll be up for 2 hrs and then start rubbing his eyes and yawning.  Usually his longest stretch of wake time is after his last nap before bed and it's usually 3-3.5 hrs.

I have actually read a few places about babies getting bored. AKA - under-stimulated. Not a newborn of course but older, more aware babies. I am pretty sure I've noticed this in my own baby around 4-5 months.   This morning, after a good 12 hour stretch of sleep with no wake ups (actually he was probably awake for about 30 minutes playing in his crib around 5am) he started yawning 1 hour after waking. I said to my hubby- there is no way he's tired already- all he had done was woke up, nursed and then sat in his high chair for some breakfast foods. So hubby took him to a different room to play where he was content for nearly another hour. He fell asleep about 2.5 hours after waking, with very little fuss and slept for over an hour! (yay, progress!!) I think his wake times ARE extending - not shortening and the morning fussiness/fighting naps is because he's not ready for a nap but ready to DO something fun.  Naps have gone better today so hopefully we are on the up and up!  Thank you ladies for your thoughts.

  • I wish that schedule worked for us! I. Lucky to get 8.5 mo old to sleep 1 nap! She goes down around 745 and doesn't get up until 8ish with no wake up. We are thankful for this, but I would like a chance to catch my breath during the day!

  • Just the past week or so my son is ready to go back to bed after being up 30-45 mins after first bottle of the day. It was closer to 2 hours before, but now he starts rubbing his eyes and gets a little fussy. I lay him down and he is out within 2 minutes and has been sleeping over an hour which is a long nap for him!

  • 6.5 months; 2.5 before first nap and around 3 hours before second nap. 3-4 hours before bedtime.
  • Right now at 7mo1w he's up for 1.5-2hrs before is first nap of about an hour and a half.  His wakeup times get longer through out the day though.

He takes three naps and a cat nap, about 1.5hrs, 1hr, 1hr or 45mins and 45mins (catnap).

  • DS is almost exactly 7 months and he can go anywhere from 45min-3 hours before his first nap. If he wakes up before he's really ready he'll be tired 45min later and take a nap. If he sleeps in a bit he can go 2-3 hours before a nap. His sleep in general is all over the place. I would just go with his cues. If he acts tired go ahead and put him down.

  • My guy gets up at 7ish and takes his first nap around 10:30-11.  I'm trying to stretch him a little so that he and his older brother will overlap for a little bit of time.  He usually takes another nap, unless the day is just too exciting, around 3ish then goes to bed about 6:30/7pm.

  • Personally there is no stretching awake time for me! When a baby wants to sleep.....better let him!! Right now we are at 3 naps a day.  usually up and at it at 6am and naptime is around 9 give or take. I know how you feel about being stuck inside!! I am so ready for spring ;)
