Banning Eggs and Dairy

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/news/student-allergy-prompts-human-rights-complaint-against-school-1.2496310

Saw this and was wondering the take on this?  Girl has severe egg/dairy allergy and mom wants it accommodated in school, like how the school has done for peanut butter. Also, in 2003 a girl with a dairy allergy died in the same school system from cross contamination.  I think the mom's fear are definitely valid.  But banning egg and dairy doesn't seem possibly or practical.

  • My son has severe food allergies to Peanuts, Soy, and Wheat. He is anaphlactic to 2 of the 3. I would never push to have them banned from the school because the Allergy free stuff is expensive, and some families may not be able to afford them. Instead, we are working on getting approval from our school district for my son to have an Assistnce dog when he enters Kindergarden a few years from now. The dog is expensive to buy as a puppy, then have them trained, but this is the better option for us. I think they should look into the assistance dog, and if they cannot afford the dog, there are charities out there who rescue puppies, train them, and give them to families who need them, but cannot afford them.

From what I get from the article the kids eat lunch at their desk. If a kid wants to eat a peanut butter sandwich they have to leave the room.  but not so for dairy and eggs. So the desk next to this girl's might have a child eat a cheese sandwich and that is where the mom's fear stems from. But so many kids have dairy or egg in their lunch that I don't think all of them could leave the room to eat.

Maybe the girl with the allergy needs her own room then. That would be a lot easier.

That was my thought, but then the girl would still be coming back to a room with cheese-y desks.  Could that be an issue?  I guess they would need to wipe them down and have all kids wash their hands.  Which seems time-consuming, but more feasible than banning the foods.
  • I agree with you.  However, if there are clear and easy steps one can take to make it more fair we should do it so that when it's not an option it doesn't hurt so bad  Sub day, hot dog day, burger day would all work and the school refused to entertain any other ideas.  It's also the same kid everytime who loses out.  Eventually it starts to take a toll.
I agree with the life's not fair- at the small school I work at there is a kid who is diabetic.  Does that mean all the other kids shouldn't get ice cream or whatever snack?  I try my best to be accommodating (I'm one of the school nurses so it falls to me to monitor) but at some point you just can't be.   Especially when you have parents who don't help out/can't afford to.
  • This is weird. Peanuts are airborne, life threatening and are hidden in tons of shit. I feel like dairy and eggs are just not the same. Sure they can be life threatening but, I haven't heard of them being airborne or hidden.

I agree with this. Manufacturers do not have to list Peanuts on the label, so you literally have to know every single scientific name for a damn Peanut. I think there are around 20 different names that they can list on a product label. Dairy and eggs can probably be hidden as well, but not as easily.

That is the stupidest story I ever heard, and I read the entire Sweet Valley High series.

  • Why can't they just order a pizza without cheese for the kid with the dairy allergy on pizza day, since it's apparently provided by the parent council anyways?

There is hidden dairy and eggs in a lot of stuff. Ask anyone that has had to do an elimination diet while breastfeeding.

YES! Add in no soy or gluten and you end up eating like a rabbit. Stupid whey, and ghee.

I added nothing useful to this discussion. Can you tell I miss cheese?

because it didn't fucking snow enough for me to build my own
  • So with this "hidden peanuts" thing.  I don't know if this is a Canadian thing, but if there is something in an package that contains a familiar allergen (wheat, peanut, egg...) it is bolded at the bottom of the ingredients. Nothing hidden.

  • I know people that are contact allergic to dairy. Kid eats pizza, touches the sink, they touch sink next and have an ANA reaction.
So sorry if all the kids can't have a cheese pizza for a treat because it may kill their classmate. Poor kids.....

My daughter is allergic to dairy and soy. It is in so much. I know people that do have a peanut allergy and they told me they were always glad it wasnt dairy because its in so much more.

I hate when people take a peanut allergy more seriously than a dairy allergy. They are serious
  • No one's saying that other allergens aren't serious. They're saying that they're easier to contain.

Wow. Lurker allergy parent throwing in my 2 cents ... The problem here isn't what is being served.  The problem is *HOW* it's being served.  All children have a right to a safe learning environment.  When allergens are introduced the classroom, the learning environment is no longer safe for that child.  Even if you take every precaution, the danger is there - and the child will feel that.

I don't want to see a ban on my DDs allergen in her school when she is of school age.  I would prefer to work with the school to provide accommodations in the cafeteria to make sure she is safe from her allergen and FEELS safe from her allergen.  In the classroom, she can just be another student there to learn.

  • Packages of peanuts say "may contain nuts" because peanuts and nuts are not the same thing.  Peanuts are legumes.  They are warning people that the peanuts may contain tree nut protein.

  • This is such a sensitive subject for me as my daughter came home last night with a reaction to something on her face. It looks like a contact reaction which means her allergy is becoming more severe. If she still has it in preschool I'm terrified of sending her to school. I've read so many stories on my allergy group that others have posted about their kids have an ANA reaction at school. I'm not saying it should all be banned but there should be a lot more procedures in place to eliminate as much contamination as possible.
  • And while I disagree with the school becoming dairy/egg free, I still think they have a lot of work to do.

The article says the teacher gave the kid popcorn with butter on it. I'd be pissed if I were a parent and they gave my child something they were allergic to. It sounds like this school needs a lot more education and intervention related to allergies.
