My poor baby

Poor DD is so freaking constipated. She didn't poop at all on Sunday and only a little yesterday and today. We've tried apple sauce, apple juice, prune juice, and lots of water...nothing is helping. It takes her like 30 mins to poop and she cries the whole time. I have a call in to my pediatrician's office to see what more they can suggest, but they haven't called me back yet. She isn't that interested in eating, which I realize is probably because what she's already eaten has nowhere to go, but that's definitely unusual for this kid. Anybody got any suggestions we can try while we wait for the pedi to call back?

Re: My poor baby

  • Have you tried bycyling with her legs or maybe more fiber?

  • I would try puree prunes and puree pears. DD usually has an explosion after those. Poor thing, I hope she is able to get it out and feel better.

  • I had to use the thermometer up the bum with Morgan. I tried all of the above and it finally came to that. My next step was a suppository that our pedi suggested.  I put her in a warm tub to relax her a bit, then took her out and used the thermometer tip, she started pushing as soon as I inserted the tip and I was able to get her back into the tub while she was pushing, it made it a little easier.  She cried, it was a hard poo, but it helped!  Her next diaper though....woowee!!!  Lots and lots of poo!!

  • Thanks ladies. The pedi office called me back yesterday evening and they said to give her 1 tbsp Miralax once a day...she pooped a little more yesterday but was still crying when she was trying to go this morning...I've tried bicycle legs and rubbing her belly, we may pick up some of the fruit suggested at see if that will help...

@ExcitedAunt2b....that's really what I was afraid this would come to...they said if she hadn't pooped at all by today I should give her a glycerin suppository, but luckily she has...I'm still pretty squeamish at the thought of having to put anything in her bottom, especially when she's already in pain.

  • @kerbear135, I totally understand!  I was freaking out about that but it didn't hurt her at all!  The worst part was pushing out the poop that was holdign everything up.  I'm not kidding when I say it was rock hard!

I'm glad she finally went, it is so hard to see our babies in pain!!

  • We did the glycerin suppository with DD.  It really didn't bother her at all and worked in 15 minutes.  I think it was worse on me who DH elected to be the suppository distributor, so to speak.  We also gave her some concentrated prune juice, which was in the baby medicine section of the CVS.

  • Glad to hear it's not as bad as I feared- she's still acting like it hurts to go, so we may still end up doing the suppository if that doesn't get better soon

  • I second the prune puree instead of the juice. Pear too - always does the trick for our LO. Hope she gets some relief soon!

  • Applesauce is actually constipating (unless it's homemade with the peel in it); it's the third food in the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet, which is recommended for kids with diarrhea and those recovering from vomiting. I'd skip giving her any pureed apple or pear if it doesn't have the peel in it. Have you tried giving her some whole citrus? Tons of fiber with the pulp there and the juice itself will help ensure its not a bit of dehydration that's plugging her up. Our little one has regular issues with painful hard bowel movements and its always worse when she doesn't drink a lot of water, has applesauce or bananas (except in small amounts), and doesn't get a slice of whole grain 4 seed bread or lots of broccoli/other fibrous veggies.

  • It appears we'd have a breakthrough, so to speak. DD exploded in my car this morning....I don't know how, but luckily her diaper contained the mess... I don't think I've ever seen that much poop in one diaper before! My car stinks, but at least she's feeling better.
